Her's a nice bed time story 4 y'all.

Way back in the 90's sometime, I was totally pissed-off with the TVR design process of making card templates and using a plum bob stuck to the roof wiv a bit o filler to find the centre line of the car (Ish), not forgetting a few of Wheelers fag butts stuck under the wheels to up the tolerance a tad.
Anyhow, I finally rang up the Rover studio where I had had worked previously, to ask Len Smith (modelling manager) if he knew where I could find a chap / knackered measuring machine.

Anyhow, he says why not ring up DICK PURPIN...(surely a wind up) at SEP or summat in Kegworth. hmmm
Ok, took a few more templates before I did finally ring up MR Turpin...
Dick was an old dude founder of the company, and asked me.."What kind of tolerance do you need son"...."er, well, erm...half ish ...point 5 will do...", I said.....silence......"what, point 05!, or 005, or 0005 of a mil??" "No actually 5mm tolerance will be a great help I said confidently!"

"Is this a bloody wind up he replies!!!!"
So, I then explain the archaic process we were using, and he then offers to come up to the factory, saying how he had seen the cars and was most impressed.

We chose a Friday, as the workforce finished at lunch time.
Mr Turpin was a nice old friendly sort of chap, who thoroughly enjoyed the factory tour I gave (I did this on many accasions, once to a Camnadian who wanted to buy one on the spot!).
Finally we finished at the 'play pen' design shack with a coffee.
Dick says " Look Nick, I can do you a great deal....
I will exchange 50K's worth of 'used' measuring machine for one of your 'used' cars"........BARGAIN!!

So, without any adoo, I go to Peter's office with my great proposal.

Knock, knock, Er Hello Peter, I have this great proposal...blah, blah.
SILENCE
SILENCE

"WHAT!, WT Hell do you think you are? , coming in here, acting above your station, trying to do deals...with who?"
Er Dick Turpin.....
WHAT, GET OUTA MY OFFICE ¤¤#¤%&%&!!!
So, that was it...could have been a different story huh.

This thing would have changed the whole process and made it DIGITAL in the mid 90's.

Oh well....

Hey Boss, there's this guy outside with something called a machine gun. Can we make use of it?

Boss: Don't bother me, I've got a battle to fight!

We had this nutter turn up one day with an experimental engine idea.
Ravy said it would not work! (was not mr Melling), seems he was a total fruitcake and had built some kinda model too.
Cannot remember much else...funny times though!

BUT
The best story of the lot was in an old letter which they had in the 'marketing' department where some bloke had written in to thank the company for the life saving Webasto folding roof on his Taimar.
Seems the IRA placed a bomb under the car, and he got blown through said Webasto roof.

I wonder what happened to all the old letters etc from years ago?
