a bit raspy though compared to the e39 v8.
Are you insane?
The best thing with this engine is slow acceleration under part throttle from very low speed past any stone edifice.
Utter rort, nay trace of rasp!
I heard an M6&M3 pull away from the light at Swiss Cottage racing each other and it sounded rasp, unless i heard the M3 rather than the M6.

what a useless comment...cue everyone coming on listing how their new RS4, decatted Cerb, Tubi'd ferrari sounds better than that V10 zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
My humble apologies. I must confess, I assumed that "new RS4, decatted Cerb, Tubi'd ferrari" owners would be above such juvenile ponderings.
What I meant to say was that I find the sound of the V10 quite discordant and unmusical - not just the BMW V10 but all V10's. I was saddened when F1 went over to the V10 as they, too, sound harsh to my ears. Nothing matches the sound of an F1 Ferrari V12 at full chat. I much prefer the growl of a V8 or the howl of a V12. Perhaps it is the irregular firing order of a V10 that creates harmonics which I find somewhat dissonant.
My personal opinion is that the V10 was a big mistake with no engineering justification. They were problematic in F1, with their inherent vibration problems and I'm delighted to see their withdrawl from the series. As far as I can see, V10's in road going applications are just bandwagon marketing, riding on the back of F1. Unfortunately, they've arrived a bit late!
I suspect BMW had to work hard to get the V10 to sound as acceptable as it does. Its rather a shame that such efforts were not made to ensure greater reliability too. I'll be intrigued to see the future of the V10.....

The M V10 noise is a very unusual throb. It sounded very good to me on the Autobahn yesterday accelerating from 70 to 140.

My mistake

Whilst the V10 undoubtedly does sound like a tenor version of my Boss's agricultural 'cruiser 3.0 litre, it is so magnificently distinctive that like a tuba with a Stratocaster rammed foursquare up it's ignoble aperture, the effect is worthy of repeated proclamation, so here goes.
I tell ya, here is a motor so fabulously musical that along urban highways, smooth motion is impossible, not because of the controversial smg effect {which isn't so bad at all, quite frankly, once you unravel the best permutatiuon of settings,} rather, from a repeated and sustained addiction to deliberate cog droppage and then medium anvil press, all for the prize of snarling growl and rising prow.
During premium moments of automotive confragrante delicto, the wolverine scream is pure, acoustic honey.

But yes, the V8 sounds better.
No, really, it doesn't.
I have to agree with the Scum of the North.
For simple 'sense of occasion' the V10 is glorious, (although I'm still bitter Daz never booted it past me in all the times I pulled in and wound my window down to listen - Der, can you help achieve this?) with the V8 a completely different type of noise.
You have to remember that the V8 although fantastic in its own right, is rather muted. The V10 is simply a young Tom Jones trying to catch his first sexual encounter with some sustained high bass serenades.
Simply spine tingling as opposed slightly grin inducing.
BMW don't half know how to make their engines sound right

Remember back to a hand free call to Der when I was overtaking somebody on the motorway, and he asked what was that lovely sound. He told me "Do it again!". Then at the end of the call, "Again!"

p.s. for those doubting Ders authority, or those who simply don't realise; he has both. And a nutterstuttgartmobilekillerthingthatnearlycosthismarraigebutmakesusalllaughaVmax.

I do apologise but I was on roads I didn't know, it was pi$$ing down and I was driving someone elses car. Will sort a demo out in the next week or two.
