the question's in the title...

I'll be in Germany a couple of times next month, so assuming that I can sell my Golf is it worth buying a LHD 911 (budget 20k) in Germany or are they similarly priced over here?

check out mobile.de (select English) and compare prices

I lived there for a while & whilst new prices are cheaper, second hand values of earlier cars tend to hold there value or they did when I was there.

Check out some models your interested in whilst your there & see how they compare with similar models here. You would also need to take into account a reduced sell on value in the UK when you come to sell (or drive it back to Germany & part ex for another LHD) & the additional insurance premiums for a LHD in the UK. KM speedo & switches/manuals etc in German could also anoy.

The Germans also keep there number plates & so some sort of travel plate would be needed if you planned on driving it back to blighty.

For second hand cars, it's 6 of one, and a half dozen of the other. Follow the advice above. Some things will be cheaper, and some things more expensive. They like 911s here too, and as often as not, I find what I'm looking for as cheap or cheaper in the UK if I'm looking at tasty 964s/993s. It then boils down to whether you feel any saving is worth the lesser degree of comeback you'll have on an older car sourced in Germany. The best thing about here, is that there's a lot more choice, and you'll probably find exactly what you're looking for.

I've been keeping a look on mobile.de for 911s around the £20K mark and to be honest there doesn't appear to be much in it when comparing like with like.

I am sure there have been times where the supply of cars and exchange rate has meant this route has made sense. Doesn't seem to be the case at the moment.

However, you will get a wider choice of cars by looking at this route.

Yeah, I heard somewhere that Germans were coming over here to buy back left hook 964s brought over in the Nineties. Might be an urban myth but having seen some of the 964 prices on mobile.de I can believe it.

Theres quite an exodus of LHD cars going back to mainland Europe as they seem to be cheaper over here. I know someone in Luxemburg who is coming over hear every fe months buying one and selling on in Europe.

Personally when I bought my LHD 106km TT for £28k(€42k) there was nothing on Mobile.de within €10k
