Just having bought a new plate, I'd like to put it onto the car I'm buying. As I wont have the car for about another couple of weeks, I was wondering if I could get the garage to do the plate change for me in the meantime.

Is this possible, and if so could anyone shed light on the process?

cheers

Where is the plate currently? On retention / another vehicle?

i had my plate on retention but posted the form direct to the OPC i was buying from. They did the paperwork and it was registed to the car when i picked it up.

from memory and i might be wrong putting a plate onto a car is quicker and easier then getting one off but i could be wrong.

best bet is to speak to the DVLA..

Send the papers to the dealers and they will (should) sort it out for you.

your right.

taking a plate of a car takes a while for them to get it all through their system propper, putting it on a car can be done in a matter of mins.

the plate isn't on anything as I've only just bought it. the car it's going on is used (thus already has a plate on it).

so I simply send my license paperwork, that I received when registering the new plate, to the stealers and they can sort?

You could do things one of two ways.

Option 1: Take your retention cert. to the dealer and ask them to sort it.

Option 2: Pick up the car with it's current registration on, drive away and do the transfer yourself.

Either way, the dealer or you will have to go to a DVLA licensing office with the V5 of your new steed and the retention cert. with title to the reg plate, where they will do the transfer while you wait. All that happens is they send off your log book to the DVLA in Swansea for you and re-issue you a new tax disk with the new reg on it for you to put in your car. Then all you need to do is screw on some new plates and wait for your V5 to come back in the post. Eaaaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzy!
