Right that's it, I'm not watching it any more they've finally lost the plot!

This week they stood in a supermarket and filmed a can of dog food going through the scanner for the price to appear on the display (30p) and Mike Brewer to then say "And that's how much the Citron costs per mile"

Totally hatstand!

yup, it's total shite isn't it, I think they must have a problem getting their hands on toys to play with or they've been told to lay off the contraversial Jeremy C type stuff. They still don't realise that car enthusiasts watch car programs and don't want to see all this other pap

You think that's bad - I happened to catch the lotus 340R test on "Carnage" (whilst flipping through the channels) Some daft bint going on about not being able to wear her hair down whilst driving the lotus at 60mph ????????

Truly Lamentable. Penny Mallory and Mike Brewer are good presenters but for crying out loud, who writes this stuff? There IS talent there but it's all but wasted.

After the demise of Top Gear, pershaps the opportunity for a decent modern INTELLIGENT car programme can grasped.

I really hope so.

I actually turned Driven off last night the bit that did was when they put the young 3 kids mum in the Jag to review. Her comment was possibly the scariest I've ever heard "I like a car that's easy to drive. The last thing that you want to be doing when you have 3 kids in the car is concentrating on your driving".............I turned off so missed the rest.

It didn't get any better, you didn't miss much Mel. I thought that comment was ill-advised for broadcast, I am sure (hope!!) that we have all taken the comment out of context and that she didn't mean what she said. I thought the kid's views at the end of the review were particularly relevant .......

The problem for TV motoring is striking the medium between popular appeal and specialist programming. Isn't that what we were promised from Sat/Cable??

Phil.

The problem is to do the PC attitude and dumming down that the media is transfixed with these days.

Programme makers don't care about content any more, they are all chasing ratings.

You only have to watch ITV1's Pulling Power to see. Can anyone really take Gail Porter seriously when she reviews cars or bikes?

People said 10-15 years ago that the increase in channels with Sat/Dig TV would not effect quality - pull the other one!!! TV/Production companies don't have the same amount of money available any more and therefore quality has been effected on all channels.

On Driven there scoring is so biased towards the latest model that has been released. If you really believe these scores then you really don't know cars and these programmes are just up your street...

Another thing, why O why have Top gear gone down the 'day time TV' route with telling us what's coming up? If you removed all this 'coming up next' crap you would have far more room for quality reviews etc...

Coverage of cars on TV went backwards the day JC left Top gear. He was someone who wouldn't give F##K about what the PR machines were saying about cars, he called a spade a spade. In fact the industry took note and JC was often refused to test drive certain manufacturers cars, because they knew that his thoughts would have a huge effect on their sales.

If it is true that the BBC have dumped Top gear for good after this season's run, then you have to bring back JC to front a car show aimed at the genuine motorist, not Mr and Mrs average who still think their Vectra is the best car in the world!!! You have the money to spend BBC, after all you threw F1 away some years ago, and now you've got rid of the BTCC and British Bike Championships to Channel 4. Hang on though...

...maybe looking at your current views on things with engines and wheels you don't intend replacing it with anything.

Shame on you.

PS. To all TV channels out there who are interested in the UK viewing public I have one thing to say to you all:

Not everyone in the UK likes Football!!!!

I agree Steve, the problem is that there is not going to be enough hard-core car fanatics around to justify a specialist car program at a prime time slot. It would soon be relegated to the backwaters of the TV schedule (a la Carnage). Still, better that than Drivel.....

I think there are plenty of people that are intested in cars to denote the prime time slot of it. People often said the best part of Top Gear was JC so much so that he had his own series. (both a chat show and a program called extreme machines)

A decent car show, which talks about top speed, acceleration, proper handling, looks and a passion for cars could do very well. Look at cooking shows how many people watch them, but don't do the recepes. (Floyd on Fish for example)

The reason carnage is on a special channel is because its C**P, they are targetting the w@nkers window, chrome 6" exhaust, stereo cossi driver. (you know morons)

Hi

i was at an automotive industry event at Arrows F1 earlier this year where Quentin Wilson was the after dinner speaker.

He said that the last straw with Top Gear for him was when the director objected to him using the phrase "English Breakfast", insisting he should use "British Breakfast" instead so as not to offend the Scots/Welsh/Irish!

That sums up the problem with it I guess - Programme run by "managers" rather than enthusiasts!

Incidentally QW was really entertaining (and much taller than you'd imagine!)

That's why only 5 million people watched ITV's Saturday night poofball program and now its being moved to a later slot - good!

That bit of news made me smile I have to say !!

On a slight tangent, I wonder if the ABD could recruit Mr Wilson to be a more well-known voice for their often quite valid points and concerns ?

So what's coming out of all this is that it doesn't matter what cars are on a car programme, so long as the presenter's got a bit of class about him/her. Actually, I think that's true! Oh, and the reason for all the 'trails in TG is that if they didn't have them they'd have to spend more time (=money) creating good programming! The sooner all the current TV about motoring is binned, the better. Let's start from scratch with some fresh ideas, eh? (Oh and no Jeremyalikes alowed either!)

Damn car shows

I hate driven/drivel at its best but yesterday was useless. I know i am a bit biased (work for the buggers!)but did anyone think the odds were stacked against the Jag in that dodgy family test. The guy was a 'racing' driver, and had a BMW with big alloys, bodykit, sports suspension etc, and they compared it to a standard 2.5 luxury X-Type, not the sport 3.0. Shite planing, of course they are going to like the BM more, f**king idiots. Must stop watching it!!!

In carnage;s favour, it can be a funny at times, the guy who does the bits reviews takes the p*** all the time. But that bird is useless, im not even sure she could actually drive at 60mph, it didnt look like it. Any notice she is always on a track, maybe thats cause theres nothing she can hit!!!

TG is still ok though if a bit PC now, except when they let Tiff 'when he's not going sideways he's trying to' Needel loose. Check out tonight, the R-Coupe is on, nice beast, shame we arent making it!

Anyway if the car programs are so cr*p why not make your own, i know id watch it. Question is what would you call it and who'd present, any ideas!

I'd call it 'Full Throttle' just to screw all the PC people out there

As for the show itself, I'd like to see a show produced which was actually 60 mins of quality viewing.

I luv drama & wildlife as well as cars, so if these can have 60 mins devoted to them why can't cars.

Format, well with 60 mins I really think you could focus on say four strong ingredients, that allows for nice segmenting for adverts - cos the BBC would never be interested these days!!

A piece on a latest release, a classic, spotlight on motorsport - national or international and finally an informative look at all aspects of cars beit safety, prices, public transport, etc.

As for who should front it, well to be honest I think it's time for a group of unknowns who are passionate about cars, and because they are unknowns the cars and features will become the focus of the show.

If there are any production companies out there who might be reading these threads, well there's one very keen petrol head right here ready to try it...

BTW just for the record my daily car to travel to and from work is a Lotus Elise and I luv it

This reminds me of the Top Gear Car of the year a couple of years ago (when the fiat Multipla won it) - my brother met Quentin Wilson in town one day (QW stopped to admire my brother's Mini and said nice car! My brother was seriously chuffed), and he asked QW why on earth they awarded that pile of automotive arse the car of the year. QW's reply:
'Fiat Paid us a lot of money to do it, why do you think?'

There's got to be a market for a real enthusiasts motoring show - and fdor god's sake have presenters with their own style, not just the JC clones that seemed to crop up on Top Gear after he left.

An every week, have a list of cars the the manufacturers refused to let you review (presumably cos they're crap, a la JC), and say they wouldn't let you review them, so obviously they're trying to hide something (without being libellous, not that describing the Vectra as crap could in any way be described as libellous)

I always remember JC commenting on a toyota A-B machine saying it was like driving a washing machine. It was actually a compliment as it would be reliable, does the job with no frills etc. JC got told off for this and not allowed to drive any more Toyotas which he said was a shame because he was looking forward to the MR2.

Car manufacturers seemed to be ashamed of some of their cars even though they are designed and good for a particular market. Not all cars do 0-60 in 6 seconds but not all drivers want to do 0-60 in 6 seconds.

"Can anyone really take Gail Porter seriously"

I'd like to take her any way!!
As for Drivel it is pure shite. But Top Gear is just as bad. Quentin, Tiff and Clarkson were excellent, but the mob they have now... who is that spotty Irish twat on there? Will someone tell him he's not funny and he's not doing a very good parody of Clarkson...

Did anyone see that crap on "making over" a BMW the other week?
Must admit I am a football nut aswell as a car nut, but I think there is enough footie for me on Satelite TV to satisfy my needs It doesn't need to be on the Terrestial channels at all really. I am quite prepared to pay for it and I do!!
Why is Men and Motors so rubbish though?? Why can't we have a decent motor programme on the telly instead of all this changing rooms type dross?
IMO it's going to remain that way until the BBC go private and the shareholders won't put up with a load of politicaly correct left wing Janet Porter-esque tossers running it.

Oh no the nutty woman on Driven who does not want to concentrate on her driving only lives a few miles away from me
