Took my first moon shot last night. Taken with my 30d and 70-300 mkIII USM. Fingers crossed some L glass is on the way soon for a better result.

Cheers.

Canon EOS 30d
ISO - 100
Shutter speed - 1/500sec
Aperture - F8
Metering - Spot metered
Focal Length - 300mm

Manual levels in Photoshop.

Fingers crossed i'll get a longer lens soon so the results will be a bit better. Will have more of an excuse to practice then

My attempt last night was a bright bright so tonight I'll retake it.

that was with a 300mm

The 500mm mirror lens I have kicking about came out badly.

Nice shot. How comes the mirror lens shots didn't come out too well?

Good work with the Canon 70-300 - I've got the non usm version of this, and think I'd get a softer result with that lens.

It is still fooling the metering though, the lower right part is very much whited out.

Well my first try was a few nights ago and I used the mirror lens 1st. All the pictures seemed unsharp and generally bad but was my first try so another night I'll retry it.

You can buy the mirror lens on eBay for about £30 so it's nothing special.

Although though, saying this, with roughly the same settings the 70-300 came out a lot sharper.

Also yes it's badly exposed bottom right, I'll take that into consideration for next time.

So I'll maybe post some improvements later. Can only learn via trial and error.

Oh dear, went out and tried one myself, it's catching but cold:

350D
sigma zoom
1/400
f16
800 ASA
Manual
cropped with a bit of unsharp!

Cool image with an SLR lens! I struggled to get something that good with my scope for a while. It's worth taking images at other stages of the moons cycle. IMO the moon looks best about half moon, when the terminator (border between light and dark) highlights the craters.

Here's one I took earlier ( though with a 1200mm f9 scope!)

Can be anightmare reaching focus - with this scope there isn't enough depth of field to get the whole of the moon in focus at the same time due to its spherical nature!

I re-call Mr Carter mentioning the other stages of the moon cycle a while back and posting a piccie I couldn't hope to emulate - but when it's warmer I'll be out there.

excellent shot. tempted by a telescope that i can hook up to the 30d. guess it could be quite pricey though?

This was taken with a cheapo ebay 5" refractor. Was about £250 inc scope and mount. Used a "fringe killer" filter to reduce the CA which is inherrent in these cheap scopes. THe mount is critical - it needs to be SOLID.

DOn't do it though - it's a slippery slope! Gets VERY expensive if you get into astrophotography. Whilst you can start off with a cheap £150 scope, a basic setup is about a grand, and some of the Americans are spending 40k +. It is also the hardest thing you will ever do. Looking around an hour and a half to set up to take one image. That's if the clouds don't come in. Oh and you can only do it on clear nights and for one week a month when there's no moon during the winter!
