Might I ask you lot for some sample rates, from across the board, based on what you and/or your friends tend to charge per hour/day, and in what line of photographic work, etc.

A grand a day seemed to be the going rate for getting a photographer for the day to shoot random stuff in hospitals and pharmacies last year. One of the reasons we got our own camera and I do it

Personally I'd only charge 500 quid or so as a reflection of my lesser experience. First wedding I did was only 250.

edit to add - that grand was via our design agency though, not direct with the tog - no idea what the markup was. Knowing them, probably 100% rolleyes

Depends on a variety of factors really. Im in the south and I charge £500 a day (8hours), everything like retouching advanced processing/retouching is extra. I use a digital back and have my own studio, a lot of "photographers" have to hire in equipment and hire studios, so those charges are on top. I shoot commercial/advertising & industrial and don't touch social stuff as agencies don't look on that very favourably.

Can you expand on that Andy? Just curious what the issue is.

Not sure what the exact issue is but I know agencies don't like it. It could be down to the aura of the social photography field, i.e some people think its all babies and soft focus, or it could be the fact that you are not specialising in a particular field.

Im no pro, but I am still enjoying selling photos (for now) irrespective of the money involved. Love my microstock/food shoots, and people seem keen to exchange food for photos...
idea

The reason I dont want to get involved in negotiations about money is because then it becomes a sales job. With higher expectations too. I dont want to have to "sell" my services, discuss price, nor loose shoots I want to do to other photographers.

I just want to shoot, for fun, for me. So its much easier to keep it free. No hassle. No negotiations about money. They send food, I shoot it and get to keep my photos. And the food

I asked about rates to get an idea of what people are charging. When discussing an attractive deal in sausage currency, its probably worth saying "a good photographer might cost in the reigon of £700 for a full days shoot, at that price your image processing might also be included..."

If I mention the above, Im more likely to get 200 sausages, rather than 20 Thats it really.

Blimey. I'm in the wrong business. 200 sausages a day!

I love sausages, me. yum

Mind you - that would make a GREAT photo. 200 sausages all doing on a huge griddle/bbq yum
And sausage heaven afterwards...

Going by the "4 half-decent sausages to the £pound" rule of thumb, thats between 120 and 240 sausages per hour. Its a good thing then, that the poor homeless impoverished orphan children with no electricity or running water who live in the desert dont read these pages, they'd be awfully jealous.

To bring this slightly back on track and away from sausages (although they do look mighty good!).

The trouble particuarly with motorsport photography now is that it is fairly easy for Joe Bloggs to produce a half decent image that looks OK in an add or a website.

Joe Bloggs wants to be a 'pro 'tog so he gives the image away for free thinking that gets him on the ladder to being a 'pro. What he fails to realise is that by helping to destroy the market he's helping to ensure that there won't be a role for him as a 'pro - they'll be plenty of other people giving their images away for free when he's trying to cover the cost of his hotel room!

Is it any better in other commercial areas of photography? Are the pricing guidelines issued by whichever organisation (sorry can't remember) more adhered to?
