Hey guy I'm looking for some advice. I want to renew some of the heat shielding around the engine and transmission tunnel while I have the engine out. Some of it around the exhaust manifolds is a bit burnt. Anyone got some recommendations on what to buy and where the best place to get it from.

Cheers

Christ that's wierd. I've only been searching tonight for exactly the same thing. There's nothing to be found in the searches that matches what Quinny just posted up here.

There's another post from Paul_clark3000 in 2003 which mentions Agriemach.co.uk which sell something called Reflect-a-Cool (which they still sell) and also mentions Demon Tweaks.
I'll link it in a sec in case you're interested.
I'll be phoning one of these tomorrow and ordering some to do my engine bay either at the weekend or next week - depending on when what I order arrives in the post.

Righto, here you are Here
and this one mentions an adhesive you can get at Halfords (or at least you could in 2003!
Here

Quinny - what adhesive did you use?

Note to self: I really must get out more

The stuff I got from DT looks similar to the stuff in Andy's picture but is adhesive backed.

Just ordered Reflect-A-Cool 48" x 36" for £72 incl VAT and Delivery.
I measured the engine bay this morning and the existing heat shields were about 13"x31" so I'll easily get both sides out of this piece with a little bit left over which I'm going to wrap the starter in to protect that a bit.

Do you want to tell me what you are doing next Quinny, as I seem to be following the same route as you so I might as well plan ahead

dont forget to cover the mounts too if you have some left, aslthough IMHO it does make it a little more diffcult to see the state of the mounts.

Oh, yes. I forgot about them. I plan to make a little jacket for the starter by sewing some velcro to the heatshield so I can easily get it off anytime for inspections. I'll see if I can knock the same up for the engine mounts. Good idea BB, ta.

Still following your plan Quinny, so don't do that body off BEFORE you retire!

Don't cover the starter yikes

It will keep the heat in, you need to cover the cause of the heat near to the starter i.e the exhausts.

Oh. I got the idea from Demon Tweaks - they sell a starter motor jacket.
Not a good idea then?

Surely you jest? The starter only runs for a few seconds - unless of course its been fried already and then it doesn't spin at all!

Body off is a retirement project for me too. Only 20 years to go, let's hope the POR holds out till then eh?

I "lagged" my engine mounts with self adhesive reflective tape from Demon Tweeks when I replaced them. I did think afterwards it was going to be a bit expensive to check them, as I'll have to lag them again. Maybe some mat held on with the ubiquitous cable ties - or velcro - would have been a smarter move.

If you want the original stuff try Neil at TVR CarParts. 'Tis where I got mine from and prices were v.reasonable too.

Aaaaaaargh, thats about a third of the price I just paid.
Did one sheet do both sides?

You don't happen to know what size rivets you used there do you?

Got mine from Rally design also, they always have good prices for most things.
I even hemmed mine on a sewing machine as per original....

I just used ordinary carpet adhesive and its been fine so far...

Not sure, I redrilled to the size of the new rivets anyhow. They were stainless steel and I used far to many of them, should have used half the amount at most!

I got the rivets from Orbital fasteners (google it) whilst buying a load of other stainless steel bolts.

I didn't bother sewing it, I thought it looked better without. I used the old as a template and just made an over size version; then folded back the edges and stuck them down with hi temp glue just to hold in place before rivetting.

How did you get on with this stuff? Was the adhesive back up to the job?

Dunno yet, I only fitted it today and haven't got the manifolds back on yet to fire up the engine. It's quite thin stuff so I simply cut it to size/shape, cleaned up the old heatshield with white spirit and stuck the new one on the top. Done a nice job too.
I'll post a pic one night next week when I finally get the car back together again.
