thought I'd put my current conundrum to you lot

have been offered a seal grey 52-plate (reg: oct 02) TT with 34k on the clock for £50k

fPsh
colour coded wheels (for that stealth look )
satnav (pcm2)
bose
sunroof
phone module
black leather & small aluminium pack

last owner has put a tubi exhaust on smokin

whaddya reckon? seems like a great deal to me on the face of it (I'll only be doing around 5-7k miles PA. The only thing for me is the whole 3 owner thing, but if that's not such an obstacle for shifting these types of motors, I'd love to hear it. ie. do you think the trade will shake their heads etc. the day I look to change?

Anything I should look out for? (this december it requires its 2nd major service - I've been quoted £1038 inc by the nearest Porsche Centre).

I'm right on the verge of pulling the trigger... scary

maybe coz £50k is a lot on any car?

go for it, it sounds fantastic value - you won't regret it!

IMO 996 turbo's are becoming more desirable as people realise what an amazing car they were/are.

sounds nice and that is a very fair price

btw Bose and sunroof are std spec

the only thing that I do not like and IMHO woud make resale more subjective is the colour-coded wheels

Yes, if I go for it, it will be subject to getting a 1yr opc warranty.

regarding the wheels being colour coded - I actually quite like the look! looks more stealth-like bandit

I have an 02 midnight blue example same mileage but with the major service done AND a very recent clutch, 12 months OPC warranty and full OPC alignment done for the same purchase money.

Might be worth a look before you take the plunge? It'll work out cheaper to own for the next year

Check out www.pistonheads.com/sales/95709.htm

Otherwise, seems like an alright deal.

Cheers

Guys, I've only gone and done it

Subject to a Porsche inspection & warranty being done on Monday (I went half's with the dealer on this), the car is mine (have put a refundable deposit down).

Looking forward to joining the club. Although I will have to arrange to take some time out to pick the car up from up North now, and I have no time free for the next few weeks... hmmm... shall I take a day off to go and get it???

Most likely! beer cloud9

(god I hope I've done the right thing!!!)

I'm sure you've done the right thing. These cars are awesome -- slow in, fast out though seems to be the way (cue GT3 mafia and understeer) but the relentless stomp of torque in almost silence is surreal. Beautiful to look at too when you're polishing it up on a Sunday afternoon. You might want to change the MAF (cheap) just for kicks and giggles in case it's gone off which after four years it might well have done. It'll still feel quick but there's no point in spending half-a-hundred grand on a supercar and not having 100%.

Have fun!

Excellent - Well done.

As the above post said, slow in fast out. It cant redifine the laws of physics, although it will come close.

I wrote off my first 996tt as I went IN a bit too fast did not get to the OUT bit.!

look forward to see a pic.

just an update..

Have just got back from sunny Sheffield (started out from Surrey at 6.30am this morning). Took the car out for a test drive and checked things over (won't know the real deal until monday, after the Porsche pre-warranty inspection, but to my untrained eye, all was in good order - 4 wheels, a steering wheel and an engine where it should be
wobble).

Without question, this is THE fastest road car I have ever driven. Having never driven a 996TT before I can honestly say that it was actually quite frightening. You know, the sort of frightening that invokes mad, insane grins... Seriously, I am actually pretty worried (read: scared sh*tless) that I will shortly be bereft of my license if I buy this thing - you simply don't know what speed you are doing! I can only assume you TT owners use a gps-thingyme?? (would love to know which one works best by the way???)

The Tubi that is fitted absolutely transforms the sound. WHAT an exhaust note it is, simply no comparison whatsoever to the standard sound. It sounds like a full-on racing car, but if you're just dawdling around it's really not too intrusive, just has that "interesting" mean, almost burbling sound. I feel a few irreverant Dartford Tunnel passes are in order, windows down of course bandit

Just hope monday's inspection turns out to verify what I thought about the car. Fingers crossed then.

Sounds good.
But
I'd ask them at the inspection if the tubi exhaust affects the warranty at all.
Get it in writing if they say it doesnt affect it.
This question comes up on here occaisionally but never gets answered definitively.

Found this on Scuderia Systems' website:

Will fitting a Tubi Exhaust invalidate my manufacturer's warranty?

We often get asked the question "if I fit a Tubi Style exhaust to my car, will it invalidate my manufacturer's warranty?". According to the law the answer is an emphatic NO. However, many people, including vehicle suppliers themselves, do not know this and supply the wrong information. Here are the facts:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Law

In October 2003, European Union legislation affecting the motor trade came into force. Its full title is 'Block Exemption Regulations 1400/2002' (in short 'BER'). This legislation changes the way cars may be serviced and repaired, and gives motorists a lot more freedom in their decision about who should look after their cars.

The BER covers areas such as who can service vehicles other than agents appointed by manufacturers and, more specifically to customers who are considering a Tubi Style sports exhaust, parts that can be fitted to a vehicle. Below we draw upon in particular the issues that concern fitting replacement parts to a vehicle that are not the manufacturer's original equipment.

The BER introduces certain definitions of importance to the independent aftermarket. There is a new definition of 'original spare parts' and 'matching quality parts' that is based on the quality of the component. Vehicle warranties cannot be invalidated if these conditions are met:

Where parts used are of matching quality as the component used for the assembly of a motor vehicle. (A Tubi Style exhaust is manufactured from a higher quality material than OEM exhausts: 304-grade stainless steel, and are manufactured using internationally-certified practices. Spare parts of "matching quality" identifies parts in the following way: spare parts made by any undertaking which can certify at any moment that the parts in question match the quality of the components which are or were used for the assembly of the motor vehicles in question.)
Where parts used are of the same specifications and production standards as those used by the Vehicle Assemblers. (A Tubi Style exhaust is designed to fit to OE mounting parts and components such as catalysts without any modifications (including cutting, welding and bending of any OE parts). Its fitting is a simple bolt-on bolt-off process which can be reversed or replaced at any time without causing damage to the vehicle or OE components.)
Where parts manufacturers/suppliers are able to issue a quality certificate. (Tubi Style exhausts are certified compliant by the strict guidelines set out by the EU-recognised TÜV and internationally-recognised ISO 9001. Very few aftermarket exhaust manufacturers have such certifications.)

An interesting point is that if the vehicle manufacturer itself offers spare parts of differing quality (e.g. an "economy" or "premium line", he cannot prohibit its contractual partners (i.e. dealers and authorised repairers) from buying spare parts of the same quality from the independent market.

The BER also covers service and maintenance during the warranty period and prohibits vehicle manufacturers' warranties from including conditions requiring that all parts used must be the VA's "original spare parts".

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION DECLARED THAT SUCH CLAUSES IN A WARRANTY DOCUMENT WOULD REPRESENT 'AN UNJUSTIFIED RESTRICTION FOR THE CONSUMER.

I'd go for a techart exhaust to avoid the potential hassle.
Techart seem to have some affiliation to Porsche i think
I heard one on a turbo and it makes it sound like a lamborghini,no joke.
Sounds amazing.
And Porsche shouldnt have any quibbles with it
