Bollocks - A-road, parked trailer on my side, car coming the other way moves into middle of road - nowhere to go for me

Instant 35 - zero retardation - strangely the airbags didn't activate confused

Ah well, it's only a piece of metal isn't it?

Was the trailer parked legally? Looks like the bumper took most of the impact, might not be too bad....

Yes perfectly legally - Just one of those things - I placed too much faith in the bloke coming the other way staying to the left instead of veering towards the middle of the road - got me bang to rights really - expensive lesson learnt.

Ouch my commiserations from a fellow 993er.

The airbag deployment is dictated by the change in velocity seen in the occupant compartment. From the looks of your car I would say it is a relatively minor impact and you shouldn't have seen an airbag deplyment.

As a very general rule of thumb, if your head moves forward sufficiently to contact the steering wheel due to the impact, then you should get an airbag deployment.

better than a head on, you made the right choice !
If the passenger door has not been affected should be easy repair.

Don't think passenger door is affected - Porsche bodyshop in Bristol haven't prepared a firm estimate yet but they reckon 5 - 6k. yikes

Take it to a specialised repair/paint shop not an OPC approved one since they live off guaranteed work and often the quality isn't fantastic.

Ouch! Commiserations, I'd be upset if that happened to mine. Hopefully not too bad and limited to front PU, wing, headlight and indicator. Having said that, the way these plastic bumpers bounce back after impact, they can hide more deformation than is at first apparent.

Good luck getting it repaired - might as well get all the little stone chips done too whilst they're at it...

oouch ...That must be heartbreaking cry - there are a few really good bodyshops in the Cardiff area that can do a top class job. Unless you have any warranty commitments of course. The damage doesn`t look that bad, but it will probably cost a couple of grand through normal channels to do. The bodyshop for Rydales and Bentley do some good work, and I have a contact if you need it. They did some work on my 997 after some peasant keyed it - fantastic job, and the car came back protected and valeted for free.
I know the bodyshop in Bristol and they do some good work - but they are very expensive; they used to have the monopoly on all Porsche work until the garage in Bridgend became approved as well.

Follow up to this thread......

Car has been inspected by insurance company, and I'm waiting for the verdict as to whether or not they write it off weeping

OPC Bristol bodyshop reckon a minimum of 10K for the repairs - They've found damage to both the front of the tub and the longitudinal high tensile steel part of the chassis - The work involved to rectify the car is huge - knackered aircon - a grand for that, knackered abs pump - grand for that, a grand for something else blah blah - it all mounts up. They also say that there could be more damage to be uncovered as they start to strip the thing down.

PH'ers I need moral support and a big hug

The car has done 133k miles, so it's not a low mileage minter, but at the same time it's not too shabby either - I suppose it would cost me 22k to replace like for like (just a guestimate on my part). My heart says I'd rather have it fixed, but my head says that even if it came back looking like new it would still be a 993 that had suffered major crash damage, therefore would it be better to just cut my emotional ties, take the money from the insurance, and buy one that has no adverse 'history'

I then have the problem of a). getting the insurance to pay me sensible money and b). trying to find a replacement. I can't afford to use the insurance money as a deposit on a 993TT (my dream - but not possible at the moment) so I'm stuck with trying to replace 'like for like' on a really tight budget. This whole thing is a fcuking nightmare to be honest - I love that bloody car.

Can anyone offer any words of wisdom / comfort?

Chris

First thing is to get some documentation for the value of the car today. Last time I wrote something off, the feckers wasted months and months wringing their hands before referring to the current valuations for the payout. They seemed taken aback when I demanded its value 6 months ago! It was only a van but quite new and at about 200 quid a month depreciation they stood to rip me off a decent amount.

Good luck. No advice about the next car though, sadly.

Sorry to hear the news Chris...if it's 10k then I'm not sure what way they'll play it; hopefully they'll back you and you can get it up to scratch? thumbup

I can't see them paying you £22k.
Salvage value of this car must be over £8k so if it's going to cost them £10k+ to repair then they'll want to write it off and pay you out.

Sorry about your accident

Sorry to see the damage.....Perhaps, if it is written off or close to being so, you could buy it from the insurance company for decent price and have the repairs carried out yourself at reputable specialist? Guess you'll need to carefully weigh up all the options once figs have been discussed.

Good luck getting it all sorted!

Sorry to hear this. I wrote my BoxsterS off late last year, the initial estimate for damage repair was £5-10k which was increased to £24,500 by the time they decided they needed to replace the body shell. Insurance company paid out £1k less than I paid for it and the guy gave me the valuation over the phone. Basically he sat with his Glasses guide and looked at Autotrader online to find a comparable car and therefore determine a price.

I took the view that I didn't want it back anyway, knowing it had been in a big smash and thinking about reselling it sometime down the line, I just wanted to go out and buy something else. Have since decided to upgrade and am looking at 911s at the moment, so all in all it was an expensive accident as I've just added another £13kto my budget on top of the insurance money!

Good luck.

That just about somes it up. Nobodies dead, it's only a car.

Negotiate a good payout and go get yourself another.

edited to say - Judging by another thread you could buy a 996 with the payout and still have money left over.
