Hello,
In a few months I will require a fair quantity of food photographed for an online store - the majority of it cooked (e.g. www.donaldrussell.com/). It seems clear that the photography, at least, ought to be done professionally. What do I need to be considering at present?
As I say, this wouldn't be happening until May/June, so no great hurry.

First thing is when ever I undertake food photography I make sure that I have received a written brief from the client describing exactly what is required and needed this way both parties know where they stand. After the brief has been discussed and agreed on I contact my home economist (if they arent being provided by the client) and discuss it with them to ensure any possible problems with sourcing food etc is sorted straight away.
When you approach a photographer you have to realise that some are happy snappers that use one lighting setup for every shot they take regardless of subject matter and some are professionals who will spend the time to get the best image for the client. Because of this the charges are obviously going to reflect this, expect to be in the region of £400-£800 a day for the photographer and around £200 a day for the home economist.

Well I dont know about other regions but my day rate in the south is £500 a day, for this the client has a 8 hour day out of me in my studio with all my high end digital kit (not dslr) or film upto 10x8 and also the use of all my lighting, props, etc, the only additional charges are burning the images to cd and any prints etc, If retouching is needed that is charged at a flat rate of £65 per hour. I do not charge extra for diferent types of usage i.e for web use/posters etc as I have always felt that it takes the same time to shoot an image wether 10 people or 10 million see it.
Some other photographers in London for example will charge more per day and also sting you with studio rental charges as space is so expensive in the city.

It depends really some people like to bring the food already prepared and then let the home economist work their magic on the dishes but last week the client wanted to prepare everything freshly in the kitchen in the studio. Obviously it is going to be more expensive if the home economist prepares it rather than you do.
