930 3.3 turbo Lightweight 1979 - questions
Discussion
Have been offered a very nice '79 930 Turbo, which is 3.3, lhd, fsh and is the lightweight model.
A couple of questions as I dont know much about these;
Was there an official lightweight model 930 turbo? (and was it significantly lighter)
Whats a sensible market value on one of these? 79 Turbo lhd?
Condition is very good rust free full history recently rebuilt turbo and gearbox.

There was indeed an official 930 lightweight - named the LE, and was basically a Turbo SE, or flatnose, with the normal wings. As such, it had a deep front wing and the side skirts, and some were fitted with a rather groovy 959-esque striped leather interior. Very few were built (less than 500), but I'm not too sure how much weight was shaved over the standard model.
Back in the summer, there was a '79 LE in LHD on Autotrader, in gold, described as 'cosmetically lacking' - the paintwork laquer on the bonnet had worn off, and I'm sure some rust bubbles were mentioned, but the car was for sale at £17k. Since your car is rust free, with a full history, plus the added bonus of expensive work already done, this may fetch between £25-30k.
Hope this helps - if you need any more info, Porsche Classic (see Porsche homepage, click on Personalisation and Service, then follow Classic) there is an option to which you can contact Porsche direct - perfect for sorting model anomalies.
Cheers,
Iain
The 930LE was not a light weight. It was a Limited Edition available only in 1989 ( 50 RHD cars for the UK ).
I don't think that there are any official 930 lightweights, although IIRC some 911 turbo shells supplied to Prodrive for conversion to SCRS spec were returned to the factory and allegedly went down the line to be completed as standard spec 930s - this may have given rise to the belief.
There have been a number of "different looking" early 930s that have appeared for sale over the past couple of years. Some are quite possibly a product of Porsche AG's Special Wishes department, whereas many others will have been "renovated" over here in the UK by various operations, some of whom were much better at it than others!

I wonder if you are thinking of the 1989 (not 1979) Turbo LE which was indeed based on the Turbo SE. The flat nose (SE) was available as option to the 930 from 1984 until 1989. There were some Turbo SE's built by the repair department at Zuffenhausen as specials before that, but not before 1981. The 930 LE was only built for model year 1989 and there were 53 made in total including 15 right hand drive. I've got a RHD in Velvet Red and it is a staggeringly quick car, but that is more due to an increase in power and geometry changes provided by the factory than to a reduction in weight.
Have a look here for a bit more history. I don't think it is a complete history as the 930 LE is not mentioned.

I have also been offered the same car, in my opinion it isnt a lightweight car at all, but a slightly modified car.
Any 930 especially 'Special Wishes' are a real prospect, but they are expensive to maintain and put right like most Porsche and there are certainly a few bodgy jobs been done so far!!! Phil Clarke in the 930 Turbo/Flatnose Register within PCGB and also Barry Smith should be your first port of call before you buy and especially if you want a good prebuying inspection.
