I've got a bad feeling the radiator may be leaking on my 996..... It was mentioned that it was cracked but not leaking back in November when it was serviced and today the coolant light came on. It isn't the header tank as there is no puddle at the back so I reckon the radiator is leaking now. With all the rain recently, I haven't really noticed a puddle at the front.....

Please tell me that it is covered under the warranty !!!

If it's defective, yes.

If it's holed, no.

From what I've heard don't be surprised if your OPC "wriggles" before replacing it.
They've come up with a clause which basically says "if it's corroded from the inside it's covered, if on the other hand it's corroded from the outside it's not" scratchchin confused

Can you tell the difference between stone damage and "corrosion from the outside" ? I suspect not...........

Or put another way, "if we can get out of paying for it under warranty, we will" banghead

A little harsh, slippy.

If it has an entry point from the outside (a stone) then it will not be covered.

If it has corroded from the outside due to crud, then it won't be covered, becuase you're supposed to maintain your car.

If it is leaking due to internal damage or cracks, it will be replaced foc.

They mentioned at the service that it was 'cracked' so maybe there is hope....

V996, my source tells me it can be difficult to establish where exactly it is the radiators leak from (I asked specifically if they fail where the end tanks are attached to the core) I was told they seem to fail anywhere (and remember they have an aircon radiator in front of them) thus stone damage is "unlikely".

If they have rotted from the outside perhaps Porsche should have fitted some grills to stop debris getting in threre in the first place ?

Either way, the radiators seem to fail far to frequently for there not to be some sort of an "issue" with them.
I think another case of "if there's any doubt, make the customer pay".

IMO there is a problem with them, but if there's a hint of a "get out clause" they're using it.

Cynical, moi ? Surely not !!

If they mentioned it was cracked that would indicate it had a fault and was going to fail, so if they were going to replace it that was the time to do it? Maybe then was the time to ask??

Just rung the OPC - As Vesuvious (Mr Warranty) stated, if its a manufacturing error then covered, stone hole then not covered. But in order to find out, they need to diagnose the problem which will cost me £100. If it is covered by warranty then I will get this diagnosis cost back.

It's going in this Friday to find out......place your bets as to the outcome !

I took my 996 C4S in for them to check on a strong smell of coolant and they replaced two radiators under warranty there and then as they had both corroded along the bottom edge where the crud collects.

There is some hope then ! I'm currently assuming worst case scenario so a positive outcome will seem like I have saved money now !!

I had the same problem. Instructed them (WL OPC) to go ahead and investigate, they phoned back a couple of hours later and said they would be replacing both rads under warranty (even though a leak was only visible on one side) with no quibbles.

Another guy on 911uk was told by an OPC that they would not cover them, but after sufficient pressure from him they relented and covered the cost, so push back if they come back with the wrong response. good luck.

Great News - Just had a call from the OPC and it IS COVERED BY WARRANTY!! It would have been £600 for the pleasure without it, so the warranty has pretty much paid for itself ! I had already mentally spent the money so this is a real bonus. And only a week until I'm off snowboarding in Val D'Isere - January is working out to be a good month !

Watch this space Mr Warranty (I'm heading to Claim City next week with the same problem) My arguement for replacement (if they get awkward about it) will centre around the fact Reading inspected the car and reported the coolant level as being low during the PPI I had done by them prior to purchase (but failed to carry out any further investigative work to establish why the level was indeed low)

Perhaps the fact they would have incurred "warranty costs" that Porsche GB (who own them) would've wanted to avoid may have been a factor...................

If you have a trolley jack and some tools it's a piece of piss to DIY the AC and coolant rads.
