Track day tyres
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I am after some help with choosing track day tyres for my 997 Carrera S. The car has done a few laps around the track and I am looking to buy a second set of rims and put some more serious rubber on them. The car has 19” Sport Design wheels on it with ZR rated Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, 235/35 on the front and 295/35 on the back, factory spec.
I am perfectly happy with these on the road, reasonable wet weather grip and excellent in the dry, but I am looking for some advice on a higher wear rate, softer compound tyre for track days with enough tread to keep it road legal so that I avoid the need to trailer the car to the circuit.
Any advice would be much appreciated. I live in Brisbane, so temperatures tend to be higher, typically 22 ºC in winter and 28-32 ºC in summer. Track temps can be over 50 ºC in summer and I have known the tarmac to lose grip dramatically as the sun heats up the track, the surface becoming very slick.
It rarely rains here, we get about 30” a year but that all falls in about six storms on summer evenings, so wet weather performance is not a factor.

In order of preference:
1.Michelin Pilot Sport Cups (expensive, but ultimate grip)
2.Toyo R888 (fantastic value, at nearly half the price of others)
3.Pirreli Corsa (great track tyre, goes off in heat quicker than cups)
4.Pirreli Corsa System (great fast road tyre, that is also a pretty good track tyre too, also v good in wet)
Only my personal opinion though, as others may have other views on these, and these were on a GT3
Hope that helps.

The A048's i am on at the moment i would put between Corsa and Corsa System - the grip is almost as good, waiting to see what wear rate looks like as only done one track day. They are quite impressive on these cold damp roads - the side walls are much stiffer than the corsa's although i have not yet understood how they are behaving differently, needless to say they are not N rated.
Hi Guys.
Toyos are available in april/may time in the 19" but until then my suggestion would be Yokos A048R in various compounds, also Kuhmo ( not great but available ) Corsa track ( if you can get hold of them ) or look at importing tyres from usa, a wider choice available.
PM if any questions
