My mate recently bought an Astra Gsi and wanted me to take some photos of it for him, I managed to sneek mine in on the same trip. This is my first attempt at taking more than just snaps of cars, so please tell me what I can do better! I'm also fairly new to shooting in RAW, and found the processing a bit tricky.

The one thing I really noticed was how much easier it was to get a fairly decent photo of the Astra than my Alfa.

FIrst thing i'd suggest is to use the eye dropper tool to select the white/yellow of the license plate, then select a brush to white/yellow the letters out - to my eyes this looks waaaaaaaaaay better than smudgey letters =)

The images are well composed, but lack sharpness. There's not enough light on the front of the car in the last one imho.

I think that second one is superb! I agree they could have a little more sharpness about them, but the composition and, especially the locations, are really very good indeed.

edit; oh I agree entirely about the plates also, the smudgey-look distracts where subtle change would not.

Also, I think a little bit more light is needed on the front of the car in the final shot - it's too dark and you find yourself stuggling with it slightly.

I agree with Tony. 2nd one is nice but needs to be sharper.

ETA: a quick bit a shrubbery, hope you don't mind.

Thanks, the number plates I agree with, I just did them quickly for the net. Although, the one above without a plate looks much better! (theres an idea...)

As for the sharpness, their really nice and sharp full size (the rather common 50mm 1.8 again) but resized too 700 pixels wide they look so much worse. I've just got a copy of Photoshop Elements and used that and wasn't impressed with the way it resized them at all. I'm probably doing something wrong.

No, you're doing it right! when you shrink an image dramatically, it looses its sharpness and its often worth 're-sharpening' a touch. Its worth experimenting with the 'unsharp mask' if you havent already. It allows a subtler sharpen than 'filter>sharpen'.

Thanks for all the feedback. A bit of fiddling about with the unsharp mask tool it is then in future!
