Do you guys know if its possible to lock the mirror up and then set the pic to be taken on the timer?

Its all well and good having a lock-up but if you then need to physically press the release to fire, it kinda makes it pointless, no?

Did I see a delay feature? Is that what its for?

Spanks.

(I know its a canon) but on my 350d I have a 10 second timed shot, if I switch on mirror lockup that becomes a 2 second timed shot with mirror lockup.

You should really use it with a cable release, the first press to lock the mirror, then second press to take the picture. It works fine with me.

The last time I looked the cable release was something silly like 100 squids! eek

Think I'll consult the manual.

There's a cable-releaseLESS cheat actually

In 'Mup' mode, press the shutter button once (to trip the mirror up), and the camera waits for another press to take the shot. But you don't want to do that cos you haven't a cable release...

...so don't do anything...

...and wait...

...and after 30 secs the camera automatically takes the shot As if you have a mirror-lockup 30sec timer. PRESTO!

And he'll miss the shot of a lovely snail he was just about to photograph as it walks away.

set to timer then set to MLU see what happens. I'm sure it will as canons do it

No can do with D200. Can't mirror lockup and timer at the same time cos they're on the same rotating setting switch... ...the cheat method I describe is the only way of achieving the 2 actions for a shot on a D200 *without* having a cable.

Other alternative is to use the timer with exposure delay set (that lifts the mirror about 1/2 sec before shutter opening)... but strictly speaking that's not mirror lockup

Thanks J. Worth knowing.

I have found a basic Cable release on ebay for £5!

Also, I would think that the exposure delay setting would actually achieve the desired effect. That is to remove the possibility of any slight movement on exposures longer than 1/30th.

Good work.

Ooh that sounds a bargain... I'd be interested to hear more about your cable release I have no interest in paying £100 for one!

I would think you are right. In fact I would have thought that any slight movement at one end or other of a 30sec exposure would be undetectable - unless the exposure was of very bright pin light sources and a very dark background and the movement was quite large - which is surely not that likely from a mirror movement?

presuming it's the standard Nikon 10 pin connector there are loads on ebay cheap, I got a real nikon one off ebay for 20 quid about a year ago . . .

I think 100 quid must be for the platinum cased version with the diamond fibre wiring . . .

I bought the Adidt one from Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Adidt-Remote-Co
Took about 3 weeks to arrive - cost £7.99 including p&p. Works well, but not Nikon build quality.

I just bought a Nikon MC-36 from DigitalRev on eBay. paperbag

I did think about buying a cheap unit instead, but it's likely to get a lot of use so I thought I may as well just buy a proper Nikon remote. It was a lot cheaper than buying it in the UK.

I got one of these, works a treat. I've lost the cable release protector thingy off my camera body though.

MC-30

I've since butchered it and extended the cable for something I was doing, but it's perfectly adequate ;-)

Edited to say it must be an obsolete model as I can't see a new one on ebay at all . . . perhaps that's why it was cheap . . .

For less than a tenner you can't really argue with the cheapo ones, having taken the one I got to bits there is no Nikon quality fitted, it's good old fashioned botchit brothers engineering inside, but it works . . . and I'm sure the cheap ones would too . . .

Edited again to say : is the MC-36 the cheapest remote release Nikon now sell ? - jeez . . . what a rip off . . . especially as some of the cameras have interval timers built in !
