Prodigal/Black sheep returns to pistonheads for some advice:

What Digi camera can I buy for my girlfriends birthday that takes quality pics.

£150 to, but under £200 (there's also a trip to Prague to pay for aswell!!).

Cannon ixus?
Nikon Coolpix (s9?)?
Are Pentax (Opto A20) any good any more?

Like I say, I haven't a clue - but best value...

But thanks for your efforts.

Are Pentax (Opto A20) any good any more? - I bought one at Christmas - had nothing but problems with it locking up - so took it back to Jessops and exchanged it for;

a "Nikon Coolpix (s9?)?" - not quite s6 actually reduced from £300 to £129 - its absolutley brill !!!

I am no expert, just my experience

Optios have a horrible, horrible fault where the lens system becomes stuck and a 'battery depleted' error appears on the screen. I've done some heavy research on this and it appears that Pentax don't want to admit to the problem. I couldn't find any trace of them holding up their hands, but I found around 100 disgruntled customers. I won't ever be buying another Pentax, which is a shame, it was a lovely little camera (Optio S40).

I had an Ixus before the Pentax, and I'm very happy to have returned to the Canon fold with the A710.

Many many thanks!!

There's some deals on both S9 and 710 - where could I get examples of pic quality?

Obviously the respective websites show their £xxxx SLR's finest.

Maybe trawl some more reviews..

Best digital camera review site is www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html (IMHO)

Try looking at the Ricoh R4.

28-200mm lens, macro & less than £200
