I often look at www.adgsevenoaks.co.uk/ as I've bought/sold from/to them in the past and like looking at what they've got.
Look at the 996 there. Looks like a bargain to me - what do you think?
(By the way, no affliation at all - just the only dealer that I actually trust!)

comparing with my own recent trawling, i can add it to the list of 25K cars which spreads from celebration 964 (1993) through the lower end
993s to this 1998 model 996. talk about rock solid residuals

I understand the point you're making about the spread of cars in that price bracket, but that 996 is 8-9 years old and has only lost 2/3 of it's value from new. It's still the sort of residual that most other manufacturers can only dream of.
I've been looking for about 6-7 months and the going price for a 98 996 seems to be around 22 to 24K. The problem with these older cars is you'll only be able to get one more year OPC warantee on them, which is probably a reason there are a lot on the market now. This one has a low mileage, so I'd say 24K would be a good price to pay. Those that are sub 22K are either high mileage, tiptronics, unpopular colours or savannah interiors. If you want a high mileage, red, tiptronic with savannah interior, then expect to pay under 20K.

Theres a 99 996 with red interior for 35k at an OPc..i would have thought that would have got snapped up by now

£35k
You looking for one then kay?
That is outrageous......
Apparently, that's what my low mileage immaculate 03 cab is worth.....
Colchester OPC have a 98 996 with 46K miles for 28K, which is more the price I'd expect for a main dealer ...

Still, you'd only get one year warrantee and then it would be worth 23K ish.
