Radiator Fan Issue

Happy New Year All,
Just a quick question I hope someone can help!!
Just before Christmas the Fans stopped coming on at the usual temperature, I rang the factory and the told me to take a paper clip and place one end in each of the terminals and sure enough the fans came back on, I was told it was the temp sensor, so ordered a new one, Fitted this yesterday and went for a run in the car but when up to temperature the fans still didn't come on, got home and checked with the paper clip again and they are coming on fine!! anyone any ideas??

Faulty "New" temp sensor?

Bare with me and try not to fall asleep...I had a problem with my temperature gauge. It had a faulty sensor and was reading 55-65 when the car was running at normal temperature (80-90) but the fans were still coming in and there were no problems with the fans at all. I was told it was because the ECU (MBE type) also monitors the temperature through another sensor, I think it's on the top hose/tube coming out of the radiator on the front offside of the car. Just to confuse matters I am told not all M12s have these two sensors, mainly the early ones.
If you have replaced the sensor on the nearside of the engine and still have the fan fault, perhaps you have the reverse of the problem I had. I would check for another sensor at the front and replace that too.
Apologies if our more learned friends think this is complete poppycock but, mechanically inept as I am, I thought it was worth a mention.

I have replacd the Sensor at the front of the car, the one that screws into the piece of aluminum tubing just off the rubber hose bend on the drivers side of the radiator, Is there another temperature sensor it reads too??
Sorry for all the questions, I'm not really up to date on where all the sensors are i'm afraid.
Assuming yours is a 2.5L then the fans are controlled via the thermostat you have replaced, suggest you check it as Justin suggest by removing it and connecting a multimeter accross it then place the stat in boiling water, this should prove if it is working, you could try the original one first just to see if it's faulty.
If the stat proves ok then you need to check the relays behind the passengers footwell but think it unlikely these are faulty as you state the fans work if you short the stat out.
Last but not least are you sure your temperature gauge is reading correct ? May pay to check the actual coolant temp, if it is too hot then also check the actual engine coolant stat is opening.

The car is a 2.5L, I will check the Stat in boiling water as Justin has mentioned, would you be able to tell me where the Engine coolant stat is??

I had an issue with mine some time ago. The sensors on the early ones are a bit iffy. The one at the front drivers side turns the fans on but the gauge uses a different sensor as does the ECU. Best bet is to get the whole thing linked in to the ECU. If you don't have the upgraded MBE then not sure you can do this.

As worty says, on early cars the temp on the guage is unrelated to what switches on the fans.
