It seems that the pricing of online backup services has recently become acceptable . . .

I have approx 50Gb of images in my archive, backed up onto multiple hard drives and relatively infrequently a DVD backup . . .

The DVD is offsite and is insurance against a total loss at home, but it really is a pain to do and doesn't get done often enough if I'm honest.

I have opened an account with https://mozy.com/ as an online backup service provider.

They seem to have a reasonable rep and with unlimited backup space coming in at about 25quid for a year it's cheaper than my time burning DVD's.

I've backed 1Gb up over night and will simply leave the machine on more than usual to establish a base archive on their servers, after that it's a differential backup and therefore very efficient.

They also do a free account giving 2Gb if you want to try it out . . .

There are other services out there but this one seemed to have the edge for me . . .

Looks good, but one thing confuses me when considering online backups....Am I missing something, or taken a stupid pill?

...if my broadband upload speed is 256kbps (so say 32kBYTES/sec), ignoring packetisation overheads it would take ~9hrs to upload 1Gb?

confused

Leave it on overnight . . .

A few times . . .

The big hit is the initial backup . . .

After that it's no big deal . . .

That does look really good actually, an ideal solution but the stumbling block is one already mentioned.... given I have 100GB+ to backup and 288kb upload limit that would take, um, quite a long time! Maybe time to speak to my ISP?...

You'll not get much faster than that really though. I'm on LLU 8Meg ADSL and i've only got 768k upload.

Well, many thanks for the link, Fergus; thought I'd give it a try cos I have real backup problems with my archaic hardware, but...

Mozy currently requires Windows XP. It appears that you are probably not running Windows XP. You may still sign up, but you will not be able to use Mozy on a computer not running Windows XP. Yet.

...time to finally get a new PC I think! rolleyes

I have a lowly 1Mbit link and can sustain 50Kbytes/sec upload to their systems, it'll get there in time . . .

It will take some time to build the archive, but hey, once it's there it's there . . .

Worth bearing in mind if your ISP has a limitation on your traffic (mine doesn't) then you may fall foul of that . . .

I think it's a usefull solution and in about a month I'll have a full backup in Utah which I can access if I ever need to . . .

Plus Utah is a cool place, much better than a datacenter in London ;-)

Yeah well it doesn't work on Linux either which would be my preference, but them's the breaks . . .

What kind of steam engine are you running anyway ? Can't you just lob a copy of XP onto it ?

PS. Trying this, but have just sent them a feedback email suggesting how they could make their software slightly more bearable.

When I fired it up, it scanned the whole PC and came up with LOADS of stuff I wouldn't want to back up saying "you are 700% over quota" I couldn't press "next" to deselect or to positively select, but had to do it on that dialogue. Unchecking one folder line would have the applet scanning the whole PC again and I'd be down to "you are 654.23% over quota". It wouldn't even let me deselect all.

You'd think that on start up you could select "that, that and that" directory? rolleyes

Anyway, once past that stupid bit, you have a page as expected and it seems ok from here.

As an aside, for anyone who needs faster uploads, BeThere.co.uk use ADSL2+ which has 1.3Mb/s upload, 2.5Mb/s for their business service.

I've had this running for a few days now. The client application is VERY obtrusive, to the point where it's tipped my PC over the line to being unusably slow (nothing special, Dell GX260 2g P4, but not exactly ancient either). Mainly hard disk activity causing the problem, which has been a problem for a while but if kept completely defragged it was OK. Filemon shows Moxy applications reding/writing more than all others put together.

Wow, I can't tell it's even running on mine and it's 8% of the way through 50 Gigs of upload . . .

Mine's munching away and it's not even doing a backup. Mostly queries TO it from explorer, i assume something to do with the My Computer integration.
