On mine, the battery compartment is accessed by removing the front NS wheel and removing the door at the rear of the wheel arch, so wouldn't need to whip the bonnet off, but if you're gonna take the bonnet off, remove the four bolts as decribed by Big Al, but then there are the two spring catches at the tail of the bonnet.
Push toward the outside of the car and lift the bonnet to release. I'd advise getting assistange for the lift. Not heavy bit tricky to align, especially when refitting.
Good luck
Pete

My battery isn't under the main bonnet - it's only accessible from a hatch in the inside of the front passenger side wheel arch.

The one time I disconnected the battery, I had to jack up the front wheel and remove it. I think two bolts to remove the "hatch door", one more bolt that holds the battery in place, and then one bolt for each terminal.

Edzi - I don't think I can see the battery when I take off the main bonnet, so I beleive Big Al may have you barking up the wrong tree. However - should you want to take this off, there are spring loaded catches near the windscreen on each side, then nuts just below where the service hatch is closest to the windscreen on either side, and nuts right next to where the service hatch hinges.

There should be terminals underneath the car behind the passenger side front wheel that the RAC/AA would hook up to if you needed a jump start. I've never used it, but this would be the easiest point to jumpstart from as it doesn't need a jack or a spanner. (The terminals look the same as the RAC/AA hook up to on their own vehicles without having to lift their bonnet.

you don't need to remove the bonnet. Wheel has to come off and you get access via the flap under the wheel arch.

As far as I know there is no other way.
