My 02 Carrera 2 smokes briefly on start up from cold. It is particularly bad after it has been driven hard then left overnight. Sometimes it produces a big cloud of oil smoke. Someone told me this happened to theirs - is it normal?

Yes this is normal so long as it only lasts for a few seconds. I think it is the result of oil resting in the cylinders (because they are horizontal) and been burnt off on start up.

They ALL do that sir

sooner or later and to a greater or lesser degree,
as ^ mentioned the layout of engine and its valve position at rest sometimes, allows a tiny bit of oil into combustion chambers, where its
burnt on the start up
causing a large puff of smoke,
as long as it goes away its nothing to worry about at,

Do you park on a slope at times,
as this has been known to enable oil to drain this way and that

Yup, TADTS.

Vertically inclined engines don't suffer the same as the oil can seep past the rings whereas in a horizontal engine it just lays in the lowest point in the bores.

They dont smoke, change the oil seprator it will stop this, they can get worse ive seen them and the smoke is so bad it can make them undriverble, when i pull the motor on a trip to do rms i allways recomend a oil seperator change because there not expensive and the work to get to it aint nice.

Mine's got a new oil/air seperator....

Err, it doesn't smoke a lot on start up actually, but it still will do it if driven hard and then left

I guess if you thrash it as hard after you start it, as you did before you stopped it, then you wouldn't notice the smoke so much!!!!

HTH.

Thanks all. I'm feeling a lot better about it now. I'll check out the oil separator.

That's the parts price... ends up about £700 fitted though if it's a tip as access is a pig apparently. Had to have mine changed as she was doing a good impression of the Torry Canyon.

Is your drive on a slope? I used to have this: Park it at an angle (after driven hard and left for about a week), smokey start up. Park on level (after driven hard and left for about a week), normal small smoke.

I've no Porsche experience, but I do have experience of Horizontally Opposed or 'Boxer' engines from Alfa Romeo, BMW, Subaru and Volkswagen.

After a thrashing, they all smoked on the next cold start. As stated, oil seeping into the bores. Nowt really that can be done about it.
