Auction Watch on page 28 of this week's Autocar confirms late 993s are now worth more than early 996s.

My guess is that in a year or two we'll see £15k 996s but struggle to find a decent 993 for less than £20k.

That's been the case for ages, I thought. Every time I look for a nice 993 over here, I come across loads of '98 and '99 996s that are cheaper than any of the 993s I'm looking at. It has to be said that some of the early 996s are extremely good value now. I'd be tempted by the later car if I found a nice red one. The problem for me has always been the incredibly cheapo feel to the early 996 interiors, with their bakelite dashdoards, chaepey-chaepe leather and flaky silver plastic bits. Bit of a pound-shop feel to the thing.

Thats why they are cheap, made to a price, a profit has to be made somewhere hence crap materials laugh

Ooooh careful, you'll make the 996 support groupies jolly cross! They'll be along shortly with beard, horse-brass and wee-smell jokes to cheer themselves up!

'Twas only a matter of time.

i thought Porsche made loads more 996s than 993s so now both models are getting a little past their prime the fact there are fewer 993s must make them more attractive. Supply and demand.

i'm really glad I didn't buy a 993 when i was shopping for one.

I would've had to sit at home reassuring myself about the depreciation and how much the car is worth rather than going out and actually driving and enjoying it!

So what you're saying is you can get a faster and better car for less money?

Nice.

you're right guys for the money these 996 are bloody good value!
Still tempted myself, may wait a bit longer to see how much cheaper they get!
Maybe next year i'll sell her indoors's RX 8 thingy and bag a 996 for about 15k.
Use it everyday and keep me old fashioned antique hairy bearded 911, that may have gone up in value

Hardly a surprise - ties in with this thread on low-depreciation motoring:

my 993 was mistaken for a 997 the other day and i quote "its got the proper lights". in 5/10 years i think 993 will look newer than 996. until they see the 19th century interior (that said early 996 interiors are pretty gash)

I notice that well looked after early 996's have not depreciated one iota since this time last year.
Surprisingly enough though ALL variants of 993 , from C2's to S's to TT's have taken a bit of a slide (and some , like the S's , maybe more than just a bit..) , no matter what year mileage or condition.

I must agree with the original post though , there's a fair amount of unloved early 996's out there , and they've taken the biggest hit of all.

Remember folks at this festive time of year , a Porsche's not just for Summer!!

I was about to take a picture of a 993 coming at me from the distance the other day ... It turned out to be a nouveau beetle ....

Aparently my old Sinclair Spectrum is worth more than the Dell laptop I am typing on.

Isn't life strange?
