Out and about in my shiny 993 and bug*er the first salt wagon of the year round here got me with some spraying salt chunks. At least I only had to drive another few 100yds on the salty bit of road to my turn off, and the roads were dry at the time. Anyway I had vowed not to subject my P&J to salt (I have other cars for that) so what next? Do I:

a) Panic, meticulously wash it down geting water in all the intimate inner workings bla bla bla bla. What a pain!
b) Shrug shoulders and leave it in the garage until its next salt-free outing?
c) Other stuff?

Anyone know how to tell before you set off whether your local council is going to be salting the roads?

In the grand scheme of things I can't see driving 100 yards on a gritted road having that much effect.

If it's really bothering you give it a quick hose down.

There is a small gap in the rear wheel arch liners whereby if you get salt in there (which you probably have) it will start corroding the engine compartment leading to your engine dropping out followed by your clutch and transmission.
I wouldn't worry too much though

Salt is baaaaad!
If you dont clean it all off your car will be in a much worse state than previously mentioned. E.B.C. is the least of your worries! The worse case senario is W.D.C.C. and in really bad cases S.H.W.D. all of this can be avoided with a hose pipe of course!!

Hmmm, the prospect of the engine and sundry other mecanicals dragging along the tarmac doesn't sound too great - rather spoils the effect, sparks and all etc.

Perhaps I'll get the hose out. Seems like any prospect of less than 3 degrees C or so means blasted salt everywhere, so I'm grounded.

Might be unconventional but imagine what it will do to the sound of your car...

So just to be completely sure (yawn!) - do i need to hose down the whole car or just underneath it, including the wheel arches?

My 993 has suddenly become my daily commute so it's going to do 40 miles, 4 days per week. And to make matters worse, because I can't get it into my drive/garage (see other thread about grounding - doh!), it's also going to have to live outside on the road at night.

Not sure I'll be able to sleep.

The best time to be sure the council are'nt out gritting is when the temperature plummets, and there is a really good chance of it snowing it if is'nt already. There won't be a gritter in sight then!!
