Just got a canon 400d today and have got a lense from an old canon film slr in the house. Its a canon FD 50mm 1:1.8 which im guessing means its got a different fitting. What im wondering is can u buy an adaptor to make it fit, and if you can would it be worth getting one or is it a rubbish old lense thats not really worth it.

You can get FD to EF adaptors which will allow you to mount the lens on your 400D. EBay is probably a good place to start. I'm no expert on Canon lenses, but a friend has the same 50mm and seems to take some good photos with it on his 20D e.g. this one.

However, if the 50mm is the only FD mount lens you have, then depending on the cost of the adaptor it might be worth buying the EF 50mm f1.8 instead and you'll then have the advantage of autofocus. They are about £70-80 and it's about the best value lens you will ever buy. Very sharp and quick.

I think the genuine Canon adaptors go for quite a lot of money - £50 to £60 last time a looked, so for a 50mm prime I doubt it is worth it - just invest in a new lens.

My 600mm FD lens, from my eBay seller, came with an adaptor which he used with a 1D body if I remember correctly. He got some excellent results snapping birds. It's not a Canon adapter - think it's Kood. The non-Canon adaptors usually go for around £10 to £15 I seem to recall. Maybe less now the market seems to have shrunk further in the last year.

As I don't have a digital body yet I haven't tried it. Plus he has removed the adaptor lens that corrects of infinity focus. Although I have that lens with the adaptor I'm not sure if messing with it will have upset the overall optical quality. Indeed whether the lens quality would be signifiacantly reduced by the Kood glass in the path anyway. I suspect it might be.

So when I get around to a digital body I will surely be seeking a Canon adaptor - but given the price of a 600mm EF lens (and multiplier!) the decision is a little easier to make!

As said the 50mm f1.8 on EF mount is peanuts and prolly less than any convertor.

Its a good fast sharp lens, built cheaply and with dodgy focusing, little 'long' on croped cameras for general work but good for portraits etc, well worth a punt.

Heres (hopefully) one I took with mine.
