Registering your new Ultima: Do's and dont's?
Discussion
The GTW will be coming out of the paint shop on Wednesday but I don't yet have it registered. I did make a trip down to the Brighton DVLA office only to leave again promptly, with a medium sized flea in my ear (self installed I might add) and need to re visit and get sorted for the Christmas unveiling. I want to have every bit of info that I may need so as to pre-empt any kind of possible problem (lest someone may get killed in the melay). Last visit I was informed that the 'Kit car specialist' had just gone for lunch and that an inspection would more than likely be necessary. Do they inspect all new cars I wonder? I think NOT. Anyhow, I don't wish to get all sweaty again so any handy hints?
Wayne all three Ive built have had to be inspected, (my DVLA office is Wimbeldon), its been an unbelievable experience every time.
Primarily they just want to check the numbers you put on the re forms tally with the actual numbers on the car, however because of visibily they only ever check the chassis and engine no, and all times ive been asked to read these out (how does that work for verification???!).
Also when i registered the rush last time, the guy actually asked me if is was a porsce convertible, as that was the only convertible he had down for inspection that day?!..
needled to say he was the 'specialist'..
also.. I know Wimbledon is particulary bad, but registration after inpection has usually taken the best part of a month.
(I know this is not always the case as Guildford office have done same day)
Anyway I wish you Good luck!!! (this is the bit I dread, not the SVA)

Thanks for that Gra, there is at least one bit of good news, I used to live in Morden and no doubt would have had to go to Wimbledon to register if I was still there. I will not take the car to be inspected, they can come to me (I have done this type of thing before with regards to inspection prior to removal of cherished registration number), only hope I can get it done before the Christmas holiday.
Some centres will inspect on the day others book an appointment or insist on a site visit because they don't have anywhere to carry out the inspections at their office.
Take....
MAC
insurance cover note
Tax money, in cash, so they can do the registration and tax disc there and then if they operate that way.
Receipts for all parts of the car.
Receipts for all parts of the engine.
Receipt for a 'NEW' gearbox
Filled out forms.

Wayne make sure you take photo id and a recent utility bill to prove address I had neither and was turned away first time when I registered the black car.
I did have a certificate of newness (New car reconditioned engine) from the westfield factory and that was all I presented no other receits no inspection needed in and out all registered in 1/2hour Bristol VRO. Do Ultima not do this??
All the best

When I registered the Westie all they were concerned about was the recipt for the engine as it didn't have " reconditioned to as new" or something on it. Had to go and get that sorted, went back and it was registered same day, no inspection needed. This was in Nottingham.
Basically do what Steve has said - take all the recipts you have, if you have 1 part reconned, make sure on the recipt it says to "as new" and keep your fingers crossed some jobsworth "specialist" doesn't insist on an inspection

Thanks all.
I will be going back down to Brighton DVLA bright and early (well, THEIR definition of early is 9 a.m., PAH, half of the day has already gone by then and as for the 'bright', there is not much any of us can do about that is there?) on Tuesday with all the aforementioned paperwork clutched firmly in my grubby little German. With a bit of luck and an understanding/sensible DVLA employee, I will be on the road by 25.12.06 right and proper, without it, watch this space..............

I rang Richard and said ".... having a problem registering the car ...." He Said "... send me the paperwork and I'll sort it ... "
A week later the tax disk & documents turned up and I was ready to go. No inspection or hassle. He went to the Nottingham office. Guess being "trade" helped??
Good luck mate.

Well, well, well........... three holes in the ground, but seriously, how easy was that! I was late getting to the DVLA office and after waiting for about 8 minutes saw a young fella called Dan. He certainly knew his stuff and after a bit of rushing of here and there to get things checked and fetch change it was all over! No inspection necessary, all paperwork correct and present, job done. I was out of there within 20 mins.
In hindsight, as with the SVA, I really do think that it is a combination of the individual that you deal with, the situation or general atmosphere at the time and the place that you take it to.
SVA for me at least was not an experience that I would like to re-live but not altogether that bad that I would rather boil my head than go there again. Registering and licensing on the other hand was very nearly enjoyable (apart from the act of actually handing over yet more money, nothing new there then eh?)
So GTW is now officially a road legal reality. Going down to the paint shop tomorrow to start fitting the car back together. As expected, there are a few issues about the finish that has been achieved that I am not 100% O.K. with but in all fairness to the paint shop, no one has reported the sound of any fat ladies singing in the locality yet so lets just wait until they feel that they are in the position to ask to be paid.

Well done amigo!
Been keeping a low profile lately as so busy in the run up to Chrimbo and the house sale etc. but have been keeping occasional tabs on your progress and it's great news to hear of your success. I am now waiting with baited breath for the grand unveiling! (As I bet are all the other Ultima peeps!)
The little detail that I am aware of thus far is, I am sure, just a taster of far better things to come and I am fairly certain that most will be struck dumb with admiration for your creation.
Long live the GTW!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps. Almost forgot -- BLACK IS BOSS!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Steven, you certainly played your part and it will not be forgotten.
If you are referring to the TR that Ditto will be going to on that same day then yes, if the weather is good, count me in.
Do you fancy going in tandem?

Not the same thing. Wickham Square is over my way north of Fareham. I thought Keith's (Ditto) car was in bits for the winter. Last I heard the dash and electrics were all over the garage floor.
Wickham Square is your traditional market town square which these day can park two rows of cars down the middle, cars down either side and a road through.
The Wickham meeting goes back many years and is just the whole square full of anything Transport related including cars, military, vintage, steam, bikes etc.
Last year it was packed from end to end from early morning into the afternoon.
Was fortunate last year that I ended up down at the open end so just managed to get out at around 2pm as I had a meal to go too.

Steve, if things don't pan out I may well join you instead. Keith has his car on the road again now.

Yeah, fully intending to make it down your way for the promo. Haven't had any communication from you or P as to what day yet so just let me know. I have got the family over from abroad for Christmas so will have to slot it in around the usual family duties. Difficult to defend my Ultima build budget from the vultures (Gordon Brown has a lot to do with it - 4% stamp duty is a killer), and have had to dip into it slightly (property is just so f

king expensive these days, but I had to stretch for the most essential build tool - the double garage!)so have been working my nuts off to build up the reserves again. Gassing Station | Ultima | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
