Ok fellow Ph'ers, bit of advice needed. I live in SW London and need a new family car -however people now hate 4x4s and they are depreciating exponentially. I have a <1yr son and a 40k budget to replace the golf diesel. Having owned Ferrari/Lotus etc it would be nice to get a Q car or something I could track or enjoy sans baby and use with. Having spent my life with sports cars, it is now frustrating as I have to be careful with the next purchase to be PC. Should I shoot Red Ken or ignore the potential next few years attacks on what is simply a big, family car with a bit of PH spirit?

Question to you lot is... is an RS6 a better choice as it is covert and will not attract lentilists or Richmond do gooders, or is a PCT better as a Cayenne turbo will attract vandalism and hatred simply because I want a car that is higher and easier to put the sprog in. Hand on heart I want the Porsche Turbo but I feel I can only get away with the RS6.... your thoughts...(tomorrow cos I'm off to bed!)

Cheers

Personally, I don't like either of them.

If you've only got a one year old son, what's wrong with a 997? A Cayenne or a big Audi seems a bit extreme.

Surely the RS4 needs a mention? I'm thinking you'll be able to get a new shape one for that kind of dough?

Actually what about this bad boy!

That's what I was thinking. Far better drive than the RS6, which IMO, drives like a plank.

Go with what you really want, sod what other people think.

I reckon we spend too much of our time worrying about what other people will do or think, 99% of which never actually happens...

Cheers

If it's going to be used on track, personally I'd discount the Cayenne T and the RS6 in favour of the RS4.

However - Ajit is right, you should get what you want and not what you think others might want you to buy. If you want the Cayenne T then go and get one, worry not what others might think.

If the choice is one or the other, then for me I'd go with the Cayenne. It's looks do nothing for me but the Wife would love it.

I've owned both and they were both great cars, pretty similar but I reckon the Cayenne with 20 inch wheels looks great and just about pips the RS6 for me. Driving wise, I never took the Cayenne on track but the RS6 didn't like it at Silverstone at all and I'd say the Cayenne was a better handler...

Both fantastic cars though, real all rounders!

A Cayenne Turbo is NOT a slow track car!!!!

But I'd go for the stealthmobile RS4

Go with the Cayenne Turbo and sod the greens.

They are one of the most funniest cars you could ever want to drive. Here you have a two tonne beast which will accellerate faster than a Boxster S.

It really is a hoot to drive and if you need a big family car this is the way to go. The RS6, although a little more understated is very numb to drive in comparison.

But like those before have said. Ignore what we say, ignore red ken, ignore the greens. Buying a car is all about the heart. Buy what feels best - cos that will be the Cayenne Turbo.

Christmas spirit to you all beer

go with it as long as you have a big wallet for fuel and space in your garden for the oil refinery as OPEC supply will not be able to keep up with your individual demands

Depends on how much you want to scare your boy! He'll cry with fear each time he has to see the Cayanne....they are just so pig ugly! Also, I predict London is going to be the most unfriendly to SUV place in the UK in the comming years...

Hi Ding Dong,

I have just bought a cayenne, and it was on eof the best decisions I have made yet! Great build, lovely V8 soundtrack, loads of space and much better than that BMW X thingy!

Goes like s~@t on country roads and handles really well, although you do feel the weight when braking hard!

agree with all others, don't choose a car you think people might like, choose the car you want and enjoy it!

The only car I can remember selling recently where I genuinely felt empty inside was our Cayenne S, we had it from new & poor old Emily even shed a tear or two which broke my heart & made me feel terrible. The Turbo currently in stock has helped ease the pain (quicker & some nice touches inside as standard which few of the non turbos have fitted).

Either an S or a turbo are fine cars & with the turbo coming into a price range they do look tempting, the V6 is probably not aimed at the "enthusiast" and is best avoided if you enjoy spirited driving.

I don`t think the car is going to be used on track, that will be the job of the "Q" car.

As many others have said f*ck what everyone else thinks, it`s your life, you get one go and for some people "one day" never comes. Besides, the gas coming out of the back of a Cayenne is a bloody sight cleaner than what comes out of the back of vehicles in India, Thailand, Asia, South America, Eastern Europe, Russia.... & so the list goes on.

If people want to clean up emissions why not target the tens of millions of cars that are belching out rubbish from old, poorly maintained engines around the world rather than targeting the cleanest vehicles.

Thanks for the replies. Interesting you mention the RS4 - it would be ideal but just isn't big enough. You'd be amazed at how quickly you can fill a car with baby stuff and the legroom for the front passenger is restricted because of the baby seat. Plus need the car to lug instruments and players about too so lots of space is defo required.

It's not about what people think so much as the risk of vandalism - people really hate SUVs in London. Several replies say the RS6 is 'numb' - I need to drive one and make my own mind up, but reviews are positive - just the steering which seems to be criticised. Totally agree about emissions - Cayenne is a cleaner car than 50% of the tat I see on the road every day. My bike probably kicks out more rubbish if I'm honest.

Will test drive both and report back - still thinking the the CT is the best choice and value.....

If you're feeling this way, try the Cayenne S too. It's quick enough to give your passengers a fright, but won't be quite so hard on your wallet - particularly at petrol stations. The S is hardly a church mouse in the fuel consumption stakes, but when it comes to a little drinky, the CT is the automotive equivalent of Barney from The Simpsons. It's rumoured that at least 500 of the CT's 2500 kilos is due to the small black hole that resides in its fuel tank.

The RS6 is insulated as a drivers tool, however, as a mega fast family hold all it is the absolute bo*locks. I love the look and the sound of them and really enjoyed mine (Nogaro Blue). RS4's are very tight for space in the back.

I totally agree that certain people in London are becoming militant against SUV's. Precisely the reason I dismissed buying one, even though I rate the vehicle highly. No way could I expose my family to the risk of the abuse and vitriol sometimes directed at owners of these vehicles.

What a ridiculous statement from someone who is quite obviously an intelligent bloke....The progress needed in reducing emissions will have to begin in the West where the the capital to invest in the emission reducing technologies is available. We had the luxury of polluting for many years as we developed technology and it is this that has allowed the wealth creation that we enjoy today.

The government is now putting into place taxes (very slowly!) that will incentivise (BUT NOT OBLIGATE) buyers to choose less polluting vehicles and this will put pressure on manufacturers to produce more efficient vehicles. This has to be better than legislation as its the market making the decision (ie as the economic buyer we have the choice). Our choices (and therefore funds for manufacturers to invest) will eventually allow technology to be delivered in the West that will probably be manufactured and used in the poorer countries that you mention. It truely irks me that we rich in the west can continue to pollute just because we can afford to and the Cayanne is a prime example of this. Does anyone really need something as polluting as this? and what really gives them the right to do so when they have the economic choice of not doing so (a choice that poorer drivers in developing countries do not have!)
