993 remap - where and indeed at all?
Discussion
I'm considering a remap and exhaust for my pre-vario NA 993, really to get the best out of the engine following the rebuild.
The rolling road run at vixpy's showed a fair old flatspot at around 5700rpm , so I'm hoping that a remap would iron that out as well as up the overall.
So my questions are:
1. do I have anything to lose? I assume that a remap would be reversible if so desired - ie back to original settings?
2. exhaust - a actually like the fact that my car is unobtrusive and not loud so I don't want to have a particularly noisy exhaust - is it possible to be both quiet and (power) efficient? Also I really don't want any noise problems at track days.
3. where to go? Obviously Ninemeister is well known, and they are probably my first choice, but location-wise they are pretty inconvenient, so, anywhere else I should consider down south?
cheers
Daniel, I am really interested in your question. It`s something that I am also considering, but the info. is very confusing!!!
I like the idea that my pre-Varioram car could be re-mapped to around 300 BHP fairly inexpensively, but I do not want to stress the motor too much and get loads of problems (or bills)
Is this really possible or am I dreaming?

Well, I'm pretty confident it can be done with some reliability based on reading posts from and articles about Ninemeister.
Obviously there must be a compromise - it can't come from nowhere - and I'd like to understand whether its just fuel economy or if there is a drivability (or similar) consideration.
I suspect a lot depends on the current condition of your engine. I'm pretty confident in mine having just had the top end rebuilt at not inconsiderable expense and had it dyno'd showing pretty respectable figures at Surrey Rolling Road.
I'd certainly recommend a rolling road run before you do anything - if nothing else it'll give you a feel for the current state of your engine.

Dan, i've been thinking about this too. If someone like Wayne will do a two in one at Charlie's road then i could well be persuaded...
As regards the exhaust, it's pretty well known that it's virtually impossible to improve on the standard exhaust system by just changing the silencer boxes (my RSR's are for the noise only) though it seems likely you can open up a little bit by switching to 100 cell cats (or not cats at all).
TBH i'm not sure it's worth the cost if you like your car nice and quiet. Perhaps have a chat with your chosen tuner before the remap session.

The bottom end of these engines will cope with figures way in excess of 25-30 hp you are talking about adding. Really not an issue.
As an example the 993 RS gained its extra HP by the addition of larger barrels and pistons to get to its 3.8 litre capacity.
This engine produced 300hp and used the same bottom end as the standard Varioram C2/4 cars.
Sorry reread ur post ,Wayne unlikely to come down South, but he really does have an incredible way with exactly ur cars ,mid range improvement nothing less than staggering ..............cos hes done it so often should nt even take that long .............hes somewhere around Warrington these days !
Cheers.
Is this the right Wayne Schofield?

The thought of trusting my car to somewhere called JamSport is a bit disconcerting ...

I think the 944 titanic boys clubed together to get Wanye down for a couple of days - paid for a B&B plus the rolling road time and got about 4 cars done. Seemed to suit him and them
I might be interested in something similar of others are and the idea intersts him. I live near Marlow

in short tertius coz I'm at work, sorry:
1. nothing to lose, you won't want or need to revert though it would be possible.
2. yes - the stock 993 mufflers can't be bettered anyway on power - it's the cats that limit power but you'll get what you're after leaving exahust standard.
3. wayne schofield - he does 9m's. you can now go to him direct. lots on 993 forum on pcgb about this.
remapping normally aspirated 993's (as opposed to tt's - different rules (thanks mod500 and derestrictor and ace_parts!
)) on a rolling road does work and is a good route to more power - as long as you're prepared to always use high octane fuel. I've had all 3 of my NA 993's remapped by wayne, brilliant results.
glad to david:
1. first 993: C4 Varioram....can't remember!
2. second 993: 1996 C2 Varioram: 311bhp peak bhp on optimax. £500+vat with wayne schofield through 9m
3. third 993: 1996 C4S Varioram: 306bhp peak bhp and 282lbs peak torque on v-power. £400+vat with wayne schofield direct.
every time the power upgrade made the car feel lighter and more responsive...as it was the mapping the car should have always had....i.e. more agressive and to better benefit from high octane.
the c2 with 311bhp absolutely flew - I wonder where it is now.....

www.jzmachtech.com close to St Albans / Watford. I have used these guys to service my car, and have talked about remapping woth them around 500 last year inc a trip on the rolling road.
Did good work on my car and they had loads of other 911s in when I went there. Anyone else comment on them?

I think JZM Machtech are the best at servicing and setup and they also do a good job at engine tuning, but I think there are a handful of people who are better (and who specialise in) engine tuning.
No direct experience, just internet forums and talking to people who’ve had work done. 9m would be my first choice though.
