3.2 Carrera servicing
Discussion
Gents,
Two things. My 1984 3.2 needs a service, the first in my period of ownership, and please forgive me if I'm being thick here, but whilst the service book says every 12,000 miles or once a year (it's done just over 6k since its last service) I noticed from JZ Machtech's website that it offers 6k and 12k options. Also, I telephoned another garage to enquire about prices and the chap on the phone said "Which service do you need? The big one with tappet checking etc.?"
Is current thinking that the 3.2 needs a "minor" and "major" regime?
The last stamp in the service book has a hand written note saying "12k service" in addition to the stamp.
The second question is: which garage would be best for this car? As I live near Brighton, Parr, Paragon and Intaporsh are all fairly close, but would a trip round the M25 to JZ Machtech be worth it? I used them for replacement driveshafts about six months ago and found them to be excellent - they're just a bit far away when you're on a tight time schedule.
Are there any other garages which have mechanics well versed is such an old car?
Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

6K service is just an oil change. One filter and 12 litres of oil plus 30min labour for changeing it. I was charged £185 by my OPC on my 3.2 for this. Unless you want a stamp go to your local independent for 6K service and supply the oil from Costco or similar. Oil was £120 of above bill!
For 12K it involves plug change and valve clearance. This is a fairly time consuming job and will cost around £500. Pick a good Porsche independent for this one.

Only if you want to pay OPC rates at an indy
They're all good indy's but I have found JZM to be ridiculously expensive in comparison to others.

12 litres of oil? Are you sure? Why is that?
There a lot of oil in the engine, and its not the cheap stuff you want to put in.
Mobil one is what Id go for.
Paragon are quite straight, they're not cheap though, over a ton an hour.
Ask for Mick Clare,he's the service manager and a really straight guy.
Sounds like you want the 6k service if you've just had a 12k.
Hows the car running, does it start well from cold etc, and hows the engine sound ?
I recently took my car to Weston Porsche in Beckenham, which is quite close to where I live. Warren there is a very straight talker also. He's not Paragon prices by far, the service was good, and he really knows his onions. He used to look after Nigel Benns cars.
He recently had my carrera, did a beautiful job.
You can contact Muller [ he's on here ] Dan works there and is a very nice guy. Its worth a trip up the M23 for the cost saving alone, and he'll drop you at the station if you need.
Ive just looked up his phone number, its 0208-778-3585.
He's in Saturday mornings as well.
Tell him I recommended him to you [ he may give me a discount if I put some punters his way. ]
Good luck
PM me if you like, but Im out till monday.
Best Wishes
Paul

Fair do's but 12 litre capacity?
be careful with mobil one very runny and is prone to find leak points on early air-cooled engines, i was told to use a semi-synthetic when i had my SC a few years ago.

Porsche 911 engines are dry sumped.
Most road cars have a sump under the engine that the oil pools in before a pick up pipe and strainer draws the oil to the oil pump where it is then distributed around the engine.
Don't confuse a Porsche with a normal water cooled car.
Engine cooling is acheived by aircooling and oil cooling.
The engine has a separate oil tank, and cooling is further helped by an oil cooler at the front of the car where the oil is pumped via long lines.
Oil plays a much larger role in cooling Porsche engines, therefore you need more of it.
Yes 12 litres. Check in one of the nice Mr Haynes manuals.
Leaky old engines do suffer if you use less viscous oil.
I wouldn't consider non synthetic oil in mine.
Mobil One's about £10 a litre, there ya go !
Not used them myself but have heard very good things about www.carreraperformance.com/contact.htm
FWIW, i use my 3.2 as much as possible and will cover between 8-10k miles a year, so I will have a 6k after 6months and a 12k every year, irrespective of mileage. Each time using a quality 10/40 semi-synth.
I personally wouldn't use Mobil1 , but that depends on whether your engine leaks or not (my old 3.2CS didn't leak a drop, but my current one does).....i think a 5/40 or a 10/50 would be suitable if going fully synth.
my two penneth....
Very kind of you to say so fella, yours is looking pretty sweet too.
7 and 8's were bought off this site before i bought the car, pretty much gotta have them for aesthetic reasons IMO.... think the purists prefer the 6's for 'handling finesse'
Not really contemplated the no-spoiler look...yet - got more important bits to sort like oil pipes, suspension and such.
BTW, just round the corner from you in Catford (the posh part

Thank you for the good info, I didn't realise all 911's were dry-sumped. That's one less thing to worry about then, no risk of running dry on corners!
Did wonder how the old porsche's got away with having no water-cooling system, now i know
So what's needed for the 12k service? I should look in the haynes manual myself really, i've bought one but haven't opened it yet!
My 3.2 needed an annual service and the tappets were not done last year. A 12k service at £480+ vat from JZM looked a lot, espec. as tappets were not noticably noisy and car was running great. Decided to do the just 6k service myself. Bought plugs, 2 filters from JZM for about £50 all in
and did it myself on a Saturday afternoon.
Dead easy, just a bit of care not to make sure the plugs screw in nicely.
Oh you'll need a big drain pan for the oil - at least 10 litres came out.
