You'll find most around that price range are much of a muchness - so don't fret.
Personally, depending on what type of photography she's into, other than just a DC for the sake of having a camera, I'd take her into say Jessops or Dixons, and have her look and play with different one to see which she prefers or suits her hand size, etc.
Then you can look online for the one she likes.
It may well be she really likes one at £250, but online you can get it for £210 - she gets a better camera and you stick to budget.
If that's not a goer - then Fujifilm, Panasonic are others to look at as well as Canon.

I bought this for my wife via ebay:

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FX07 Digital Camera - RRP - £289.99
7.2 Megapixel/ 2.5" large LCD Screen/ 4 x Digital Zoom
Item number: 150066610564

£140 + £10 del - actually bought two as they were such a good price - next day delivery & it's a UK boxed camera.

(BTW no link to the seller other than as a customer)

recent gadget show reviewed the new canon ixus the current sony and the fuji.

fuji won even though it was only 6Mp versus 10Mp. Faster, less shutter lag, better handling of difficult light conditions and smoother (less noise) picture if lacking a bit of detail compared to the 10Mp jobs.

reviewed

fuji F31
IXUS 900 TI
sony dsc N2 (i think)

touch screen on back of sony was fiddly and sometimes didn't respond, not what you want when you are trying to capture something quick.

www.dpreview.com is quite a good site for camera reviews

Realistically the "we've got 10M Pixels' fight it just a words game.

I currently use a 3M Pix fuji with a big zoom and the images I got from Galapogos last year are stunning even in A4, so is there any need for 10m in a little point and shoot.

The more pixels doesnt make you take a better picture just a bigger one!!!!!!

That is a Bargin! and one up from mine.

One of the problems with the smaller, micro style cameras is how to hold them to stop camera shake?

Personally, go for a larger style and you will get better results - I promise you.

It is deffeniatley a once in a life time trip, I would say it is worth the money, but it is not a holiday in the true holiday meaning.

Up at 7ish, out on the inflateable power boats 8/9ish back for lunch then out again to either a different island or bit of the same island.

Still saying that we missed a couple of Islands so we have a reason to go back.

I think you'll like it. I certainly think mine is superb for the money. Get some 2700mAH rechargeables while you're there and you'll need a bigger memory card but they aren't expensive. You can get a case of ebay and you're done well within your budget.

I didn't have a budget as I wasnt looking for a camera, but seeing that camera at that price its hard to resist and can hardly go wrong with it from the reviews I have been reading

I bought the Fuji F30 at the weekend after much research - I needed a small pocket back-up camera.

I'm delighted with it - great colour reproduction, and extraordinary low light performance (very little noise at 1600 ISO).

Best bit of all - Currys did an internet price match at £167.
