I don't mean I want to capture the rain, but as in I want to take photographs while it is raining. I was out and about playing a couple of weeks ago and it was chucking it down. I was trying desperately to not get my camera wet and it didn't work, so ended up legging it and it did spoil it for me!

I guess I don't know if water (some rain) will ruin my camera or not? So do you photograph in the rain? If so, how...do you take an umbrella? Or do you cover your camera in something?!

With it getting to the depths of winter I fear this will become more of a problem, not less

Thanks!
T

It depends which camera/lens you are using. I've used mine in downpours and it got totally soaked but it's meant to survive in these situations. I guess most cameras can survive the spots of rain, but try to cover it with something. Carrier bag often comes in handy.

Done half the time up here.

Make sure you have a proper hood - and preferably a camera that doesn't leak.

(D2X is good at that )

Seroiusly... most half decent DSLRs will take a fair bit of rain without complaining - but when they do they shout.

Main problem is working with ND filters in the rain as they really screw up photos when they get drops of rain on them.

It's never going to be a big lens combination (400 type size). I have a 20D so it's not a big camera either. It got a bit wet and when I got home i just wiped it down with a clean cloth. So a bit of water's not going to ruin it, then? Jolly good!

I think I need to experiment with some of Tesco or Sainsbury's finest.

I've got one of these

not the most practical thing, but it stops the water.

You can buy "plastic bags" with a threaded ring in them. So the camera and lens go "in" the bag and the ring screws on the lens thread. If you see what I mean.

Not sure what they're called - but it's a cheap(ish) shop bought option.

Failing that, you can make one from a ziplock type bag. Cut the corner so it's a little bigger than your lens circumfrence and then use an elastic band to keep it around the lens. Again, if you see what I mean!

You can then put your hands in the bag to control the camera controls. IYSWIM.

Thanks Steve. When you say hood do you mean on my jacket to pull forward, or the hood covering the lense?

Good to know I'm not going to kill my camera with some water, anyhow

This is great, every time I post there's another 2 replies above!! Thanks guys.

Yup I do see what you mean about the zip lock bag thing. It's not like I want to take photos underwater, just stop the crap and rain getting onto my pride and joy (That's the camera, by the way ) so they sound like good options!

Thanks again peeps

edit; lens hood. ta!

I use a rucksack on my back (where my camera is stored), but I open the umbrella and stick the handle down the back between the rucksack and my back - voila - complete coverate and both hands free for shooting...

hehe

I remember photographing on the beach once in driving rain. It was so heavy I nearly lost a contact lens. My cheapo Practica survived as a result of employment of plastic bag though

Big brolly and keep a microfibre towel in the bag to keep wiping down if it does get a bit wet.

I remember reading that condensation is best avoided too (I suppose any moisture if going to start to affect contacts and such?). The tip there is that if you're out in the cold, put the camera in a sealed plastic (e.g. big ziplock) bag before coming into the warm (condensation settles on bag not camera).

Hope that's not egg sucking advice -just passing on what I read (edit: plug for Digital Camera mag. for that tip)
