Chess Assistant 7 Light is a freeware chess interface program that can run with separate chess engines - a number of which are also free.

I think that LEGO do a star wars chess set (they do a few) so if your son also likes LEGO this could be a winner.

If you really need a free one then this may be of use... www.gnu.org/software/chess/

However, Fritz chess can be had for aroun 15 quid and is superb. I have v8 but v9 is now kicking about and you can get it from amazon.
