Tram Lining

Went to london thunder the other week,only issue all day was tram lining on the inside lane of the M1,anyone else notice it when moving into and out of lane ? maybe its my tyres?, got a few weaves going in places. Any thoughts as to why it might do this ,it was a bit scary at times.

I think you will find that its down to the weight all the heavy lorries having put grooves into the road surface. I get it as well on the M3. You can actually see the grooving there.

Had that happen to me on one of my local roads soon after picking my current S up. When I bought it I knew it needed new tyres and once fitted and the I got the pressures set correctly there hasn't been a problem

Sticky steering column bush (the bush in the bulkhead) can give similar symptoms - the steering sticks slightly when you don't expect it to so it feels like its tramlining.

and to add one more - on mine the 2 universal joints on the steering column were worn (both original). This gave a 'sticky-spot' when turning the wheels under load, cured by replacing both u/js (many suppliers - Peninsula, TVRCarparts etc). Also stuck steering rack gaiters over new joints to stop road-dirt wearing them.

As mentioned before there are really bad lorry ruts in the road. I seem to see them more and more recently, I thought that lorry axle weights were limited to stop this. Maybe the roads are just getting worse.

They`ve stopped maintaining the roads. Another rouse to get us off the roads!
Even my new Golf tramlines in some places, and my S is like a go kart in comparison.

Thanks for the replies, I will check the Steering Bush and Universal Joint and try some different tyre pressures. At least I know its not something Evil to do with just my car.(for some strange reason that always makes you feel better doesn't it)
