who wrote the book?
No one, yet. Screenplay is by the Mexican director himself, El Laberinto del Fauno.Thanks.... will have to see the movie then. I've rarely found a film that matched (my own, possibly warped; take) on a book carried over to a film so normally prefer to read it then see it.....
"Devil's Backbone" is one of my favourite films, along with one of his earlier efforts "Kronos", an intelligent and modern look at vampirism.
Don't quite know what happened to Hellboy and Blade 2 - just awful.
This one sounds like a return to form though, greatly looking forward to seeing it.

Rather like Penelope Cruz - a fish out of water in Hollywood, always offered the weak role, the love interest, until she goes back to Spain and makes a film in her own culture - the result, she's magnificent, a revelation.
Volver
- what a world apart from the likes of Gothika?! Mind you, in the hands of Almodovar, I wouldn't expect anything less. Los Angeles said:
In Volver was she on par with Salma Hayek, or is Salma hot even when cold?
PS: I know one is Mexican the other Spanish but they have so much in common, si?

Heh....are we talking about Hayek in, say, From Dusk Till Dawn or in, say, Dogma? Oh, hang on, she was ridiculously smodering in both.....I can't think of a single film where she was "cold".....

Salma made that smoldering chamber piece with the baby-faced Irish brat set in LA in the thirties, he a writer, she a waitress in the diner who becomes his muse and saviour. She was a goddess there - gave a long jaw-dropping nude scene at dusk in the shallows of the ocean beach. Holy Tamolay! Gimme the slo-mo remote!
"Pick me up when you go go ..."

Then she did do, I think, The Faculty (B-movie style horror) but totally redeemed herself, IMHO, later with Frida. Though not so obviously sexy in that, but an amazing performance nonetheless.
For the life of me I can't think of the film you're referring to?

Ask The Dust, a very fine early LA novel by a (then) struggling writer, John Fante, a true story of his experiences in the Depression, adapted for the screen by Robert Towne, the same chap who wrote the great China Town. I don't think it got much of a release. (Co-star, Colin Farrell, weak or miscast in most things he's done.) It's a very LA set story - every bit of it recognised by me ... but without the experience of meeting Salma Hayek.
We are a long way from Labyrynth but it's a nice detour.

I'll search that one out, sounds interesting.
Agree that we've gone off on a slight tangent but what a nice tangent eh?
Colin Farrell....hmmmmmm....do you actually rate him at all? My own opinion is he's in the Keanu Reeeves camp of great movie star just not a great movie actor

He appears to have a kind of Celtic intensity that gets him selected by directors with one eye on the teeny-bop brigade at the box office but is - to my mind - usually badly miscast unless playing his age and character - a mix-up, weed smoking, ass chasing, boozy dissolute brat. (Wish I had his bank balance.)
Most recently, Miami Vice. In the parlance of our time, OH MY GOD, what was he/they thinking. He seemed to have been cast as some 80s throw-back, complete with mullet hair-do and bad suit, whereas the rest of the cast was firmly planted in the modern day.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Doesn't look as if his ass fills his pants.
"LA, good to see you! Got your project financed - great lead attached - Colin Farrell.
"Fantastic! I'm so pleased. He's a wonderful actor - great intensity, Celtic like me.
"Terrific. You two will be dynamite. I'll make sure he doesn't read Pistonheads - eh?"
"Gulp."
