I noticed there have been a few posts recently on what to buy instead of a TVR should they no longer become available.... I don't want to get into the politics of it all but I would like some input from you guys on a business idea I've been contemplating for a while scratchchin

Essentially modifying a standard car into something along the lines of a proper TVR eg Griffs & Chims, that's a lightweight two seater sports car, V8 soundtrack & good looking eg some suitable discreet widetrack bodywork modifications etc. The idea would be to productionise the process to a small level.

Essentially would you lot be interested in the complete package finsihed? thoughts & opinions welcome please especially regards would be considered a tempting figure that type of thing.

Choice of powerplants would the all alloy lightweight Lexus 32V V8 engine at 280bhp or all alloy LS series engines both with properly engineered chassis upgrades using one of these as the base car....

Something a bit like this

vomit

Can't see this ever being seen as an alternative to the Griff. Once an MX5 always and MX5 whatever engine.

Is that a modified front splitter off a Tuscan S under the back bumper? Possibly the only connection I can make! Back to the drawing board I think Cpt!!

Hopefully I can add some perspective here...just my 2p:

The idea of an MX5 with a big engine really appeals to me...the ultimate Q-car in 2 seater terms - but it has to be "silly" fast, and has to keep the standard body etc.

Personally, I would love one.

But:

It could never replace a TVR...not for me anyway. A V8 MX5 would be a desirable toy...for me a TVR is more than that.

The LS engine swap is becoming fairly common in America for MX5's, what about a bit of classic 60's styling to go with it, eg

or if Sir prefers the wind in his hair...

Think the Aussies are already onto that one (the Lexus version anyway):

If you admired the Bullet Roadster, then the SS Roadster (Sprintex - Supercharged) is about to put you in seventh heaven, we are not just talking stunning, we are talking awesome power and handling, 1220 Kilograms propelled by our piece de resistance the 320 Kilowatt (429hp), with 575 Newton-meters (424ft/lb) of torque Bullet SS Engine. The SS starts life as the Roadster with an indestructible bottom end, forged cross-drilled crank and Six Bolt Mains, the SS then gets Forged Rods and Pistons, resulting in a Bottom End Bullet-Proof to 900+ Horse Power.

Personally I can't see anything like this selling more than a handful at the kind of money you'd need to make it worthwhile, and it wouldn't be appealing to the same market as the new TVR buyer as it just wouldn't have the pedigree/image. Would be a lot of fun though .

It would never be a replacement for a TVR, but it would still be an interesting and entertaining little car

If I was going for a direct replacement should TVR's become unavailable and money wasnt a problem, Id probably head for an Ultima

Nice set of alloys on that MX5; kinda modular minilites or something of the like.

Didn't some American company squeeze a 5.7 litre Chevy into these cars and call it the 'Monster'? Dunno if I'd be tempted or not!

Its not just about shoe horning a throbbing v8 into a roller skate, its about styling too. And that mx5 don't do it for me I'm afraid.

Well here is the the entire rolling chassis, it just needs a new more TVR like bodystyle

Reckon is feasible (with no dealers) to have a 550bhp 7 litre monster on the road for £40k? Stick that up yer Typhoooon hehe

Richard, that looks massively unsafe.

From the posts on here, everyone would buy a cheap (sub £25k) V8 powered or even a nice V6 powered lightweight with unique styling and a nice interior.

In reality, I'd be amazed if anyone would open thier wallets.

Am sure it would be safer with being sat in a body rather than on a bare chassis (wobble) This looks safer, although not I don't know how it attaches

I think the only way a 25k new V8 powered car could exist would be using a barebones kitcar and assemble and trim it yourself? Reckon its just too low a cost to aim for. A car like that would be light though, and probably better served by a lightweight 4 cylinder engine than a gruntmonster.

Wasn't it thought on the TVR forum before that if the SP6 was changed to an engine that cost £2k, the overall reduction in car price would be very small and potentially make the cars less attractive as people would think "how much" for the car with the ordinary engine.... I always thought that about the Elise when I changed the engine in the kircar I had, brand new Zetec 2.0 cost £1k

Wonder how far back it could be mounted as putting a heavier engine in a lightish car could mess the balance - unless it sits as far back as in a TVR hehe
