I'm reading the latest newsletter from the Association of British Drivers and it's making my blood boil..
Reading the current initiatives to drive us off the road is like chewing glass. "Someone has to do something", is the plaintive cry I hear around here...
Well, the Association of British Drivers are the only ones who are doing anything! The organisation has been around for 10 years now. It's gaining weight and recognition all the time, but not fast enough to keep up with the tree huggers.. We need you guys...
Twenty quid a year for someone to pursue your interests is tiny money. You might even find ways to really get involved in stopping the 'Speed Kills' lobby in it's tracks.

be there or be.. umm.. non the wiser really.. and I'd expect better from you lot !
Ted: Hope I'm not out of order here, chap, but I really think these guys are our best chance of restoring some balance. Has there been any thought of linking up with them ?
cheers all....

ps... something that made me smile from the newsletter:
Caught 3 times and he claims it's working ???? Oh dear...

ps... something that made me smile from the newsletter:
quote:
Lancashire County Councillor Alan Whittaker has been caught speeding 3 times - by a camera he petitioned for.
But he believes more cameras will serve to make the county's roads safer. He backs Lancashire Police force's decision to increase their tally of cameras from 69 to 320 over the next two years.
He said: "It would be hypocritical of me to campaign for this for several years and then condemn it when I got caught. I got caught doing 35 in a 30 and I was caught out, and rightly so. Some might say it's bad luck, but I am glad it's working."
The most worrying thing is that three times he failed to see the same gatso - with observational skills like that no wonder he things the only way foward is reduced speeds.
Caught 3 times and he claims it's working ???? Oh dear...
I have spoken to them about other matters and do appreciate that they run things on a shoestring. I must confess I've not even got off my arse and joined myself.
So, Apache, if you want to convey to the powers that be in the ABD that if they want to get a banner over to me, I'll give them some FOC promotion where I've got spare capacity.

With you all the way Derek.
I joined the ABD in July (see my posting in General Gassing on 28th July) and am amazed that they haven't attracted more members. This is almost certainly due to lack of cash for publicity/advertising.
They are the only organisation 'on our side' and deserve all the support we can give them.

Hi Guys. I re-iterate my previous posts.
The only way to change is to campaign.
the most logical platform is the ABD.
There really is no reason for everyone who accesses this site not to join the ABD.
If we can't get like minded people to join and spread the word, there is little hope for improvement I'm afraid.
Come on Guys and Gals, Dig not so deep and Enroll today.
Cheers

Been a member for over a year, and will happily keep up my membership.
I must confess I tend not to read the newsletter to often, as it usually leaves me bouncing off the walls.
They have/are increasing the membership this year and its still worth every penny. If it means increasing public awareness of the real facts about cars and driving I would be happy to contribute more.

Tell me about it.. that's partly the point though... by making our blood boil, we are encouraged to be more actively involved.
There are increasing numbers of area meetings where such issues as proposed limit changes and camera introductions can be brought to light in order that everyone can lodge their objections with the council.
I know that when we're not on the road, a lot of us like to talk about it over a beer and share information. So, if there isn't a meeting local to you, start organising one.. !
Pushing the cause at track days, club meets (TVR, Lotus, Audi etc) and so forth is something I've noticed to be lacking..
Spead the word and stop the muesli-munchers !
I was a founder member of the ABD, my membership number was in the low 30's. I feel that while I support the ABD wholeheartedly and actively encourage people to join the organisation. I am at present engaged in harrassing as many politicians and drug crazed greens as I can get my hands on. So I don't think that my kind of campaign will endear the ABD to the great unwashed. One of my favorite hobbies to to attend Local authority street meets and wind the buggers up, (often making them gasp or even resort to tears) if I was a member of the ABD I would have to be logical and reasonable. I often don't feel like this and so let fly with all kinds of contravercial ideas to counter the growing anti car feeling backed by the notion that "well informed politically correct members of society know for sure that cars are evil and global warming is here".
Top Man, Ted.. leading by example.. that's what we like
Nonegreen... I totally know where you're coming from. However, I think that if the ABD wants to be sniffy towards more direct and controversial activists, then they'll remain a small minority group.
Really, we have to bring together poeple from the multitude of pro-motoring 'sects'. If there are as many people becoming pro-motor as the press seem to think, then we need to harness that people-power.
I know that it's important not to alienate potential supporters of the cause, but on the other hand, what sizeable organisation does not display diversity in the minutae of their members beliefs and attitudes, whilst standing together behind common principles and goals?
I realise siting a political party might be a distasteful way of illustrating what I'm saying, but I don't have to mention any party in particular. They all display this characteristic.
If the ABD wants to increase it's membership 10-fold - which it needs to - then it can't expect to enroll 20 thousand people who all have exactly the same point of view and disposition.
I rest my face...

ps.. Whilst treading this fine line, I am also 100% in favour of non-violent direct action, disruption and civil disobedience in the name of retaining freedom which is being greedily consumed by the government.
