Whoops there goes all my clutch fluid...
Discussion
... and wheres my sodding warranty when i need it ?
<may i apologise now for the rant which follows>
I started a new contract today, so im no longer taking the train to london every day - im driving to sunny Swindon instead, and to celebrate not having to stand up in the company of people with terminal flatulence and comedy mobile ringtones, i decided to take the porker and enjoy what started off as a sunny (ish) and crisp (ish) day. So Im on my way to the land of the magic roundabout via the A339, limping through a glut of traffic and looking for something interesting on the radio when *bang* my clutch goes straight to the floor and will not for love nor money come back.
The car still drove so i limped ahead to a roundabout (on a gridlocked two lane dual carriage way which im now partially blocking) but the lights turned on me (not physically, that would have been strange) and i had to let the car out of gear, at which point its not about to go into any other gear.
I pushed the car - and please note, at this point i bore witness to the "porsche effect" meaning i pushed the car alone, as far to the side of the road as i could, but simply couldnt get the car onto the pavement, despite trying to rock it on, i believe i made several peoples day whilst standing over a dead 996 unless the man who gave me the coffee beans sign, several who simply mouthed "look at that bloke with the broken down porsche" and laughed themselves into little ford mondeo comedy clubs, and finally the bloke who shouted "should have bought a Mazda mate" to me - were all simply well wishers with particularly dry senses of humour. Not one person stopped.
When Porsche assist arrived, and to be honest they were quick (40 minutes) and extremely helpful - i got the car towed to Swindon and dumped at Dick Lovett, the comedy name of which on any other day would have appealed greatly to my juvenile sense of humour but today raised not a quiet chortle. To cut a long story slightly less long, they breathed a sigh of relief for me when i told them i DID have a warranty, and said they would examine the car. Meanwhile Enterprise car hire have organised a Jag X type 2.5 which sounded good on the phone but in terms of driver appeal has turned out to be a shed of great magnitude (the auto box alone is enough to justify driving the entire car over a cliff, and subsequently setting fire to it).
<and now onto my point, and youll be pleased to hear... the end of my post>
so what happened ? - the OPC informed me thus: "what seems to have happened is that there is a tube which runs the length of the car carrying the clutch fluid to the slave cylinder sir, this has been ruptured - we think by a stone just under the nearside front wheel arch, and under pressure the fluid has emptied - rendering the clutch, PSM, and brakes dead. We can get the parts (three "tubes"
but one is only stocked in Germany so itll be about 4 days, and between the three tubes its about 150 quid, its a nasty job though, so after labour 570 quid total. Oh and it wont be covered on the warranty as that part isnt and its external damage anyway".
My question then is this - should i be contesting this in some way ?, or indeed can i ?. When the alarm kept going off it was fixed at Reading OPC and despite the alarm being listed on the warranty document i was charged 190 quid. Now this has happened and again IT ISNT FECKING COVERED !!. Im off to check the small print on the warranty for myself, but im not entirely sure what i can do in this situation. The car is dead and is with an OPC its not moving unless i arrange a flat bed for it, which i dont have the time to do so it seems its an OPC job, but once again im paying through the nose - despite that warranty.
Any suggestions ? (anyone citing i go jump in a lake will recieve a plague on all their houses).

Not sure as it is covered by warranty unfortunately. Had to pay for the hoses and labour, when my a/c failed, but not other parts.
May be worth seeing if an Indie can collect and sort it cheaper.
Sorry to hear about that.

So, £570 and £190. That's just about exactly the cost of the warranty.
I know I am going to regret this with a huge engine failure tomorrow, but I am glad I haven't taken out a warranty on my GT3. It just seems more trouble than it is worth...
....cue Vesuvius996, or "Super Warranty Man", as I like to cal him...

Cheers MT, i did wonder as a friend of mine said "id definitely be asking them to prove it was external damage", etc - but i just cant see how id go about doing that, and as you suggest above - ive spent the last twenty minutes prepping dinner and reading the warranty cover to cover - I dont see it mentioned in the list of things that are covered.
balls. I guess ill just have to wear it again. Still think its a great car, despite it letting me down. Fingers crossed the old girl just doesnt start to make a habit of it.

ps - if your wondering why ive been quiet of late, the new client doesnt give contractor scum like m'eself access to email/or t'internet and wont allow laptops on site unless they encrypt them themselves. So ill be piston heading at night from now on

Fieldl - It does as you suggest look like im going to have to just pull my pants down on this one again. I guess an indie would be the way to go, but like you say - investigation cost, plus the flatbed to an indie and hell the opc will probably even charge me for the coffee i had there too!.

John - i *almost* thought the same myself chap. I will become more verbose and more irate as time goes on if the list of things "not on the warranty" increases and the bulge in my wallet decreases in a disturbingly proportionate manner. I think at the moment i still fall into the camp of - im being glad i got it, as if this is whats gone wrong and has cost me this much *with* a warranty, sods law says if i didnt have it something bigger would break. But i do very much see your point.
That said - Soovy, please swing by and tell me the warranty is still worth it - itll make me feel better, and might even make me forget the battleship grey Jag on the driveway for a minute

GT3 is a stronger car, so can't really make warranty comparisons. I've had my money out of mine, several times over. Suppose for everyone that has there's someone who hasn't.
Follow DucatiGary's example and moan about the Jag. He ended up with a lovely Range Rover Vogue*
*Probably no longer lovely.
Hmmm...
"what seems to have happened is that there is a tube which runs the length of the car carrying the clutch fluid to the slave cylinder sir, this has been ruptured - we think by a stone just under the nearside front wheel arch, and under pressure the fluid has emptied - rendering the clutch, PSM, and brakes dead."
They are basically saying that a stone has ruptured a brake line rather than anything to do with the clutch (yes it shares the same resevoir) but the clutch feed line in 'high' inside the transmission tunnel and is anyway protected by a plastic panel under the entire car - it goes nowhere near the nearside front wheel arch !
The brake lines are also well protected - the flexible pipe from caliper to fixed body is covered by a 'spring' (I assume for mechanical protection) - then the metal pipes dissapear behind plastic coverings immediately.
IMO it sounds very iffy - Did you notice any brake fluid lights coming on before the failure ? Did you lose your brakes at all ? Remember that brake systems are dual systems, you can lose one side entirely and still have some brakes but at slow traffic speeds you would have noticed the brake fluid light...

Definitely ask to see the pipe.. I had my ALLY coolant pipes on my GT3 replaced FOC because they were leaking.. Not due to a stone as originally explained but due to ally corrosion. Required removal of entire rear suspension, bill would have been almost £2k. Done completely under warranty...

Very funny
Well, IF what they are saying is true, about the stone damage, then clearly it won't be covered. I wasn't fortunate enough to be covered when I got a nail in a tyre. Same difference, I had to buy two new tyres.
Definitely get under the car yourself - they may have corroded and as the poster below says they will then be covered.
For what it's worth I have also had more than my money's worth out of the warranty - £11k to be precise in two years - and so I'm keeping it. But I do so only really with armageddon scenarios in mind. Minor niggles like this I think depend on how well you get on with your OPC service manager - see if you can speak to the Head of the Service team and discuss what they can do for you. From what they tell me, three quarters of the people they deal with are arrogant tw@ts, and if you are civil with them they are often inclined to fix something under goodwill.
Bad luck mate.

Just back home now, and have read the replies - cheers for the advice all
Ill get down to see the car hopefully tomorrow, Ill admit to being completely naiive to how the braking/clutch/power steering systems are piped in the car, so i didnt realise - if they are as well protected as you describe i fail to see how a stone could have gotten to them in quite such a catastrophic manner.
Remembering what happened - nope i dont think there was anything wrong with the brakes but then i was crawling forwards at the time and was readying to take the car out of gear when the clutch just went straight to the floor - there was no loss of brakes to my knowledge and no warning lights came on. By the time the recovery truck appeared, and we were getting the car ready to winch onto the trailer it was then that all the warning lights had lit up the dash like a christmas tree.
the reason given for replacing all three components of the pipe is that the joints on them are corroded, and although they are fine currently they expect them to split in the process of getting the other two apart to replace the dead one. The two pipes other pipes are only 40 quid each though so im not hugely bothered about the need to replace all of them.
I will ask to see the car/pipes, but im still thinking ill end up paying - i cant really see how im going to make a case against the one the OPC are giving me, and Soovy seriously ive given them no lip whatsoever, i dont think my arrogance is a factor in this. I think my point is that after ive asked to see the car i will probably end up caving and thinking "well its only 500 quid", and as many of us here i can afford to do that - but what i dont want to do is have to *keep* doing that considering ive already bought the warranty. Im being pessemistic of course, hopefully she'll buck her ideas up and stop missbehaving now.
Hmm. i shall go and ponder some more.

Dont worry
i honestly didnt think you were suggesting that anyway, i was just re-iterating that i dont think ive irked them into charging me for a warrantied item. I must start using some more smilies for context !!. No offence taken. Oh... i should mention as well that when i called today and threw into the conversation that i was looking for quotes on a PSE they did say they would knock some of the labour off bringing the price with switch down to 1799 fitted. hmmm.
its not much discount (original price was just over 2 grand) but if its going to be on a ramp anyway.. .. I have tonight to think it over.
R.
ps - i should add above with relation to the PSE and our group buy, the guy today told me that the exhaust tips (either the double circular ones, or the standard cans) are *not* included when quoting for PSE retrofitment. The point being they expect you to use your existing ones as an exchange. However according to the engineer, the exhaust cans are often corroded and the bolts can sheer off. As a result they kind of expect to replace the cans - which adds an extra 340 quid (double circular ones) or 352 quid for the normal ones. Id check in whatever quotes weve gotten so far whether new cans are included or not.
Once again, the OPC are taking the pi$$ - the tips (or cans as you call them) are simply secured by a 'clamp' single bolt system (like a jubilee clip but stronger if you know what one of those is) - and yes the bolt will almost certainly be siezed - so they just hacksaw it off and replace the clamp @ a cost of about £10 each ! They can re-use the tips no problem - don't let them tell you otherwise ...
What the engineer probably meant - is that the exhaust itself is fixed to a 'bracket' (using 2 long bolts) which is in turn fixed to the engine by 3 bolts per side - it's the bracket bolts which sheer off (ask me now I know.. :-( ) and it's the bracket which you will probably also need to buy (along with the exhaust to bracket bolts). For later cars (2001>
this is apparently not an issue, but with earlier cars, the bracket is in very short supply. On my '99, I sheered 4 of the 6 bolts and had to drill them out and replace with new bolts .. not a big deal but grief ...
