A pal of mine is in the process of buying a car from an indie in London ..
They say the car has a current Porsche extended warranty (til next May)
I understood that once a non OPC stealer had a car for sale it voided the OPC warranty ..confused

That is correct. All extended warranties become void if the car is sold via a dealer. They are often transferrable when the car is sold privately subject to the warranty company`s acceptance.

If you see a dealer advertising a car with the balance of extended Porsche warranty I suspect Porsche might have something to say.

If Porsche believe the car was sold privately then they may well transfer the warranty but technically your friend will be doing a bit of a fiddle.

It isn`t rubish check the policy wording. When you sent off the slip to trasfer the waranty it was assumed you bought the car privately and so the policy was transferred. Next time tell the warranty company you`ve just bought the car off a dealer and you understand the previous owner had a policy you`d like to take over. See what happens.

Henry

edied to say :

And I quote :

Transfer request form. Part A section 2

"I certify that the vehicle was sold and purchased privately on ________________ and I wish to transfer the benefit of this Warranty to the new owner.

who`s been a naughty boy then (on more than 5 occasions !!!!) eek

Beware.

I've a friend in PCGB (the club not porsche cars) who bought a Boxster with 8 months left on the warranty from an indie.

The car went wrong big time.

Porsche flat refused to honour the warranty because it was invalidated by having been bought from an indie.

The guy is a long term customer and his local OPC tried what they could. Nothing doing.

You don't want the problem when it comes to claiming. Maybe get it in writing from Porsche that the warranty stands.

Ajit.

That's the whole point. It doesn't.

Thanks for the answers guys.

I hate to ask but .. If my pal decides to take a chance and buy the car and assume the warranty's good , how would Porsche know the car had been through an indie? (And would it make a difference that he'll be exporting the car to Ireland?)
.. In other words can he get caught on the fiddle!!?

Mate, you know I am not trolling. Why risk it?

Porsche may be many things, but whilst resourceful and sharp is one of them, dumb is not.

The dealer in question KNOWS the score and is LYING.

What does that tell you?

Best thing to do is what I did, negotiate with the indie to take the price of getting the car warranted through your local OPC, most should be happy with this as long as you've not ripped their margin to bread & cheese already Like prev. suggested, why play with fire for something worth a small % of the cost?

I wholeheartedly agree .. Except it's not for me , and I'm not being successful persuading my pal that this isn't the way to go , so I'm trying to think a step ahead for his sake.
It is a pity he won't insist in a 111 followed by a new warranty , but , since he won't , I'm wondering if there's dealer paperwork in the UK that'd make it easy for the OPC's to see it was bought thru an indie.

Alternately Suvi , could you send a few men around to 'make him see sense' ??

Not being argumentative here , but he'd done the deal (and already knocked £1750 off the sticker price) when he told me bout it .. He had no idea the warranty would be questioned , and I think he's just going to go for it .. So I hope he don't hit a brick wall if he makes a claim.

He's not a pistonhead reader so he doesn't have the insight of the collective!!

Just let him get on with it, then. You've told him the score matey.

He's buying an unwarranted car from a dealer who has told lies about whether it's covered or not. I am not sure whether he'll "get awway with it" but it shows really questionable judgement to even take the risk!!

Be ready with the hot tea and kleenex if he has a problem. Remember, Vesuvius' third law, there is no such thing as a cheap 911.

Thanks guys for the forthright approach .. The only to buy a car really..

I'm going to give him a shout this afternoon and try to persuade him one last time.

I'll let you know how he gets on .. He's travelling over tomorrow to pick up the car.
