I'm not mechanially minded whatsoever so please excuse the ignorance

Got a 2.5 on an 02 plate and not had any problems as yet but today I was driving and all of a sudden there was a loud crunch and the rear of the car violently "shook"....um... it it kinda like when you don't engage a gear properly but it wasn't the gearbox (assuming this because it wasn't felt through the stick and affected the whole rear of the car.)

It only seems to do it when driving slowly in 1st/2nd gear (good argument not to drive slowly) and is intermittent. Any ideas???

Thanks in advance

it sounds like the diff has gone

i suggest you get it looked at quickly

its not uncommon for them to break - the later gearboxes have a lsd fitted

where are you based - hopefully i can recommend somebody to do the work for you

George, speak to Ray West at Thruxton he's the nearest service centre.
I'm also in Devon if you need any help.

Yes, that will most likely been the diff. As stated above.

If you are going to get it fixed I'd advise you to consider having the diff replace with the upgraded ATB (limited slip) diff. It will alter the way the car handles (makes the car understear), but the peace of mind is worth it.

Also, if you don't have a track day sump fitted to the car, now would be a good time to get it done. It's much harder to sell a noble these days without one (should you ever want to sell, perish the though).

Best of luck

Also, if you can stretch to it get the 6spd fitted and M400 linkage (quite expensive but worth it).

If you keep driving it the the gearbox will need replacing as there will be bits floating around in side and it costs just as much to replace as to repair. Also make sure they replace clutch.

Had to have my diff done after 3 months of owning it, wasn't cheap.

Bear in mind if you change to the 6 speed, you also will need other bits as well, as the 6 speed is physically bigger. new engine mounts, lower wishbone, fuel tank.etc.

Thats why i said it's expensive, I couldn't afford to do it, so Left it as 5spd.

Stick an M400 fuel pump and wiring loom upgrade on the shopping list too - if not done already.

guys guys guys I was looking to reduce the amount I had to spend NOT increase it!! But thanks for all of your help

I only had the car for two months and already I'm thinking of changing. There is a lovely F355 I would like to get and if this problem is a sign of things to come then maybe its the right way forward, plus there seems to be a sudden surge in depreciation happening and maybe more around the corner for Nobles. I jsut don't know what to do - get disheartened when things go wrong

Very bad news that the diffs gone With the right spec Noble you should be okay. Make sure you get a LSD as a replacement diff - to drive or sell.

Don't give up though - I'm sure Fezza 355's are expensive when they go wrong too, plus their not hardcore enough

Don't give up on it. The diff is a really common problem apparently - it's just plain bad luck you have to foot the bill. The LSD by all accounts is far better and should easily see you through some great driving experiences. I think prices fall round this time of year anyway - not many people are looking for a race car for the winter.
Plus Ferraris are hideously expensive to run in comparison.

If it's the one I think it is it's a Cat D rebuild and lovely as it is it is not a patch on your Noble - thrust me.

Personally I'd leave that box alone, The major cost of a diff change is labour, Noble charge 20 hours at £75+Vat and independants around the £50 mark. This is a cost you can't avoid as it is for engine / Gearbox removal!!

A quaife Atb is £550 you then need to find someone to fit it and you will have a solid Diff you no longer need to worry about!! Personally I'd rather, and did, spend the extra 400 and have "peace of mind".

While it's out I would also have the box reconditioned, This is the cheap bit as it's only a standard Ford MTX75.
