Right then.

My 2000 996 56k miles has developed a "squeak" for the first few seconds when it's started from cold.

It sounds like the sort of squeak which you get in a washing machine when it's spinning up.

Comes from the back of the car and seems to be slightly louder when I engage reverse.

Once the car has been running for a minutes or two it goes away completely.

I am sure it's something like a belt but not sure.

Any ideas?

mine has done this aswell and not everytime i start it, just every blue moon if cold / raining.

I doubt it can be the belts as ive recently had them replaced (hope not anyways).

Right, I reckon I'll just leave it alone. I creak a bit when it's cold too.

Mine is also sounding like a tractor on start-up. Doesn't help that I am not driving the car enough at the minute.

That way the rattling of the steam engine out back will mask any other potential noise hehe

It's moisture on your belts due to the cold weather. There's not much you can do other than give them a quick squirt of WD40.

Lovely - thanks!!

Come to think of it it did start squeaking when I was staying up north at my Mum's when my Dad was in the hospice - car was living outside in cold damp conditions so it would make sense.

All part of the character!!

Don't squirt your belts with WD40!! They are supposed to stick/grip (if you know what I mean) to the pullys. the moisture makes them slip slightly hence the squeek. WD40 will only make it squeek silently! (If thats possible). It will pass don't worry, if its persistant they are worn and it only cost about £25 squids to get them changed.

soovy!!!!

get it checked out, mine broke down today just got back from the fixers, car needs parts ordering in (not sure exactly what just yet)

notices a loud squeek today when I started it up, few miles down the road noticed steam coming out the engine, pulled over, the steam was from the belt as the alternator bracket snapped on mine throwing the belt wonky.

get it looked at dude, wouldnt want it to happend to anyone else!!!!!

(he says after his "yeah its fine, mine does it too comment" )
