1965 Morris Minor

When it comes to cars, everyone wants a bargain. And with cars getting more reliable, more durable and more rot-free than ever they have been, paying pocket money for an older machine need not be a total restoration job.

In other words, old cars have never been such a good buy -- you get a lot of car for your money, and £1,000 is still throwaway money when it comes to cars.

So in the spirit of aiming for fun, low-cost motoring, here's our regular weekly slot following a trawl of Auto Trader's depths to find a drive-away bargain.

1965 MORRIS MINOR 2 door Saloon. Manual, 30,165 miles, A reliable car with a "clean" underside. One years MOT, Tax exempt, 5 good tyres, new master cylinder, recent front brake cylinders, regular professional maintenance. Needs some TLC to be 1st Class. £1,000

A mate's got one of these and he paid £1000 too and his hasn't got any rust on his wheels and grille like this one does! Not sure about everywhere else! Quite tail happy when pushed round roundabouts being rear wheel drive and all!!

A mate of mine had one of these - A pre-seatbelt model.

The driver's door popped open on the way back from the pub one night and he fell out. They don't make them like that any more!

I agree it looks fun, but thinking more Cossie Turbo or T5. But of course Serious Steering, Suspension and Brake work first!

Putting in a Fiat Twin Cam is a popular conversion. From the description it looks like a nice low mileage orginal example though so I would leave as is. Its a good starter classic with cheap insurance.

Forget the Lancia engine, a rear mounted V8 is what you need. Faster to 60 than an F40, faster to 150 than an F40. Unbelievable!

OK you young 'uns-some of us 'ere grew up with these. They make a brilliant daily driver & msot important almost any half-wit can work on them. The favourite mods IIRC were to switch to 1275cc midget motor, 2x 1.25 in SU carbs, lowered leaf springs, unwind front torsion bar suspension a few notches & fit front discs/ +(even wider !)arches & 61/2J x 13 wheels/tyres.
Sorry am I talking gibberish to you ?- no ECU to re-map, turbo waste gate management to tinker with etc.
Getting my Zimmer frame & going now..........
