My last few cars have all been brand new - 2 x BMWs, 2 x 997s, 1 x AMV8 - and I have various new cars on order (F430, 997 TT etc.). But new is not starting to look so clever...

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=1&f=23&t=326417&h=0 discusses Ken's planned London congestion charge rise for band G vehicles to £25 at length - and residents do not qualify for the 90% discount that they get with other vehicles.

Gordon only introduced VED/CO2 Band G (Porsches, Range Rovers etc.) in March 2006 - meaning that no vehicle manufactured before this date falls into it. I'm a Chelsea resident and it means that a 2005 996 TT (Band F) will cost me 80p / day in the congestion charge zone (ie. a 90% resident's discount on the £8.00 daily charge) - as opposed to £25 / day for a 997 TT. However rich some Chelsea residents might be - 80p -v- £25 EVERY DAY is a massive difference and it means that older (less efficient / more polluting) cars are going to have BIG appeal.

My search for the right 996 TT is now reinvigorated as I might be keeping it for quite a few more years than I planned. Time to stack the garage with pre-2006 gas-guzzling supercars...

P.S. Should the CONGESTION charge be renamed the EMISSIONS charge... or are emissions already taxed in fuel and CO2 based VED? I'll shut up and leave that for another forum.

Same dilema but I am not convinced that the govt wont backtrack to penalise pre 2006 cars eventually. If (and when) road user charging comes in I can bet my last gallon of fuel that it will be related to emissions or engine capacity for cars for pre 2001. Its all just a matter of time.

I usually can't help but giggle at any misfortune that falls upon hapless Londoners, however I think that £750 a month extra tax just for being a posh cockney is disgraceful. Come up north, it's lovely.

Yours is, unfortunately, VED Band G - check your vehicle registration document...

FWIW the 2.7l Porsche's are around 222g/km and slip under the 'gasguzzler' threshold.

No offence intended, but I'm not sure how much sympathy I'm supposed to have for someone who can comfortable afford to spend thousands on new car depreciation. 2 x 997s, AMV8 and a 430 on order - it's not really a heartbreaking dilemma you find yourself in, is it...

Looks like "gas guzzlers" are going to be in the same bracket as smokers and previously drinkers.

The government believes that it is a group that can be taxed to hell and back and the vast majority of the population won't be affected (even though 2.0 Mondeos count) and therefore it won't affect their vote. Hence huge revenue generation without penalty.

Lets face it any one with any intelligence would realise that any gas guzzler owners already pay more tax through increased fuel usage, but this obviously this isn't enough.

You're right - I re-read your post and you're not really whinging. I like the last bit - stacking the garage with pre-2006 supercars - have fun with that - Lambo Countach is about as outrageous and gas guzzly as it can get!!

Owners of new supercars are more than wellcome to park them at my house and I will provide the with a suitable alternative to get into London. All I ask in return is an opportunity to thrash your cars around the block when you are not using them.

Sound fair to me.
