There seem to be regular threads about how we're always being raced against, spat at etc.

I've done about 15k miles this year in my turbo and apart from one freak (and this had nothing to do with the car) I've had nothing whatsoever. No attitude, I'm let in when I need to be, never raced (although I do try and get a move on where safe so maybe I have been raced but never noticed, tee hee).

So what's the deal then? I see some Porsche drivers looking every bit the head-up-their-arse snob cruising slowly about which almost certainly catalyses some aggro, but are my experiences normal amongst the PH massif?

Was never spat at in any of my Porsches, a friend was spat at in their Audi TT cab, but that's expected . I think the whole people racing you thing is generally in your head, you expect people to race you as you're driving a Porsche. I was terrible for this, if people got a bit too close to me I'd drop down and dissappear. My wife in the passenger seat would always say "that showed them" making me feel like a right tit.

I had more positive reactions to my 911 than negative.

It's funny, I've had a number of 911s now and never had any problems; however I borrowed a 360 at the weekend and was spat at driving out of London on Friday night. I always thought people loved Ferraris and hated Porsches, it seems it's the other way around. Perhaps it's because they are a relatively common sight now?

Apart from some idiots in White Vans, and the odd Golf TDI driver I'm more likely to get a thumbs up than the finger.

People often walk up wanting to chat about it.

You really should keep both hands on the wheel in those situations...

Agree with above - sadly I think it may be more a reflection of certain Porsches owners attitudes if they get bad reactions from other road users. Last four cars have been three Porsches and an Aston and never had any probs. - if anything just appreciative glances. Only occasional probs. have been of the sort we all come across now and then and nothing to do with the car IMO.

Yes good point well made, had I have felt like a left tit we could have had serious problems.

i have had a few people ask things about the car in terms of performance and storage.

i had a merc slk try to get into the engine bay last weekend.

because they can de driven more then other sports car i think people don't pay as much attention to them.

the one thing i have found is that people think they are cheaper then they really are which is weird.

I've yet to have any sort of a problem with vandals or a-holes. Occasionally someone wants to race and I usually oblige if traffic isn't bad - strictly good humoured stuff, though. My only bad experiences have been at the hands of the Irish Gardai, who seem to have it in their heads that a Porsche is a cocky statement of intent to act the blaggard - like a wheeled middle finger at the authorities and general population. On one occasion, I was trundling along at the legal limit on a fairly empty dual carriageway in a 911, and a marked Garda car drove up behind me and then pulled alongside. They were there for a while, so after I couldn't pretend to ignore them any longer I looked over. The usual class of massive ape was driving, but the passenger was lady cop (Bean Garda). She looked at me and then, somewhat surreally, raised two fingers at me. Having signalled me to eff off, she then moved the fingers to her eyes and then pointed back at me in the 'I'm watching you, boyo' gesture.

I gave a nervous little wave back along with a sort of 'Thank-you' nod, and drove along with these guys in tow for about 15 excruciating minutes. It was like something from the Twilight Zone. Another crowd pulled me over on another occasion and it all fell into a shouting match about who actually owned the road etc. I don't think they pay the Gardai very much, so they're a resentful bunch.

So far the only problem i had was some idiot in a rented huge tipper truck...

Going through a village in reading, he sat right on my back bumper gesticulating wildly because i dared to do 30 - in a *gulp* 30 zone, which also happened to have a school letting out for lunch at the same time...

When we got into the 40 zone, i ended up behind a flat bed, and that seemed to make him worse, even though i couldnt possibly pass him, or go faster (due to the truck in front) he looked set to explode*

and then, 3 minutes later, he turns off into the truck rental place anyway...

*either that, or he really fancied me and was inviting me back to his for lots of coffee and bouncy bouncy

Don't agree. We all see the odd bit of "road rage" from time to time. I drive three cars habitually. A TVR, a Porsche and a Vauxhall. I drive all three with due consideration.

I have NEVER had anyone shout obscenities at me or try and prevent an overtake or do anything abnormally untoward whilst driving my Vectra.

Sometimes, rarely, it happens when we are out and about in the TVR. Much less so these days as the car has got older. People don't look at an S plate car in the same way as when it was new.

Sometimes, less rarely sadly, it happens when we drive out and about in my BRIGHT RED CONVERTIBLE PORSCHE. The convertible bit definitely counts - partly because you can hear what passers by are saying which you wouldn't hear in a Coupe. The RED part also makes a huge difference. I have a blue Porsche before that was barely noticed in comparison.

Now - if twunts want to call me a because of the car I drive - that's fine. If they swear at the Missus then I come over all ornery...

I dont think jealousy/anger/random acts of stupidity are singularly directed at Porsche owners. I think many a knuckle dragging chav will exhibit these tendancies toward anything they percieve to be a bit special, or an apirational car that they might well never get to drive.
Previously in the S2000 id driven back from Shrewsbury to Reading going from "sunny afternoon", to "liable to p*ss down at any minute" before id put the hood up - within the space of half an hour i had a guy in a battle worn XR3i pull up alongside me at the lights and shout "i hope it rains" before roaring off at 15 mph rendering me blind in a haze of blue smoke - which i made my way through by following his one good brake light. Subsequently as i rounded a corner a white van appeared and the driver broke his concentration on undoing a flask of coffee whilst negotiating a left hand bend for just enough time to shout "C*NT" at the top of his voice for no apparent reason, although as my best mate suggested shortly afterwards perhaps he knew me.

Touch wood ive not experienced anything like this in the porker yet but given time im sure itll happen I think itll be the same in anything sporty, aspirational, of a certain marque, etc etc if you run into a member of the great unwashed with a chip on their shoulder.

Ill just do as i always do, smile and waft on by. Their problem - not mine.

no probs here either to be fair.

had a strange/bizzare/random old geezer in a brand new BMW, doing what seemed to be videoing and taking photos of my car from behind, swerving in between both lanes trying to video and drive at the same time only to nearly take me out and then got so close to a HGV he had to undertake it on the hard shoulder having a bit of a slide on the way kicking up all kinds of rubbish onto the road.

his videoing "might" have had somthing to do with me overtaking slower moving vehicles using the left lane of a dual carriageway in traffic, wasnt swerving in and out (not this time ), just cruising in the same lane whilst all the numptys did 60 in the outside lane.

As I said, was all very surreal.

Never had any problems in the Porsches. And actually got a flash of the lights and a thumbs up from a white van driver on the day I picked up my 996.........Which was nice. eek

Got some grief when I had BMW's though. Constantly had chav's tail gating, shouts from people and glares of deaths.

Only good things...my key fob has gained most from restaurant staff even though there is a BMW key on the ring not a porsche. Have been asked several times about what porsche i have (which i usually deny through embarassment) unless i know they have one (local indian restaurant) in which case i admit it.

Weird isn't it .

Racing ? - Had a souped up Scooby which was begging for it and it really was quick ! , i was in front and he was matching the straight line acceleration, however a long sweeping bend came up motorway interlink road and it was a bit damp, i floored it in 4th and came out of the bend at Warp 4 - Scooby was no where..... yet another win for Porsche handling over these 4WD japanese nonsense vehicles.

Yep had white van driver wind his window down and say "nice car mate" - which i replied "thankyou"

I also had a sprog who drapped his body over the car when it was parked at the side of the road, as if in love. He was a bit embarassed when i walked over and got in the car as his mates where watching at the time.

No great cars and a joy to own

I don't think just 911s are treated badly by chavs/idots.

Having owned an S2 Elise 111S, I drove to McDonalds with a mate to grab a burger and as we left with the roof down, a couple of chavs in their teens started shouting some obscenities and one chucked some water from a plastic water bottle..

Now that got me fired up and with quick thinking, I drove back towards the chavs...grabbed my mate's vanilla milkshake and lobbed it square right into the chav b@stards face!!! Everyone that was hanging around erupted with laughter - classic!!! evil evil evil

No doubt late in returning his hire vehicle!
