spent last night helping a mate strip a early 20,000 mile 1960 mini to turn into a historic racer.
the shell is mint, never had, or needs a panel.
every nut and bolt came undone
its an early car with the single skin a panels and the under wing protectors, behind these the primer (no paint) is still fresh - shame the deleted this panel of the later cars!
its like a car thats only a couple of years old, the only problem is that some one resprayed it very badly a few years ago
my mate paid strong money for it a few years ago, but was never happy about the paint so decided to either sell it or strip it. after getting told by countless people on various forums that it was a waste of a good mark one, he advertised it for a 1000 quid less than he paid for it (3500 quid)
every one who either looked at the photos or came to kick the tyres said it was a piece of junk and bid him down. the best bid he got was 1500 quid...........
after a year of advertising he decided enough was enough.
within a month he had got more than 1500 quid just on the small bits and pieces, glass washer bottle, wheels and tyres, hubcaps etc.
by the time the doors, bonnet, boot, reg number and what not have been sold, its likely that he will have made more than he would have taken for the whole car.
thats economics i guess.
we still both feel a little guilty though.......

Not really the deal breaking a good car. It was a sign from the gods to finish it. I broke my 64 after I found it was too rotten to bother with. Made about £1600 on the bits which is daft as I would have made about £300 in real world prices.
I have an ex-racecar sat in the garage, belongs to a mate. 1960, never been welded, flat floor, foam filled sills, odd little bits here and there. Virtually no rust, doesn't need welding. Off the road for 30 years sat in a repair garage. Looks like an ex rallycross car, it's a bit shabby and has been painted pea green.
Anyway, lukey is in the process of using a BMW bike head, and a weird rig up including both a turbo and a blower (he's a PROPER engineer). The thing is going to hit the road completely unrestored in it's shitty green paint! (When he finishes the engine). It will be something to see.

If it ends up being put to "proper" use on the circuits mate, rather than being polished by some "anorak" as his/her garage jewellery, you'll tread a path straight to St Peter......
