Air Filter replacement

Hi all
I need a replacement air filter for my 91 S3 - it has the efi with the air meters and a foam covered box of a filter... presumably a Sierra XR4x4 will fit, or does anyone have any alternatives advice...?
I was also surprised to see it just exposed like that and not contained in a box of any sort. is this standard or has something been removed ? I dont see any pics in the bible (1st edition)

hi. i have a Pipercross filter No. C3004 air filter. and its new. i got it for the 2.8. to find out that its for the 2.9. if you want you can have it for half price. James
