Blown the diff !!
Discussion
Oops, seems we've bust the diff, at least I assume so ...lost all the drive but at least the speedo still works!
Pulled the engine out, I'll strip it tommorow, assuming it's the diff pin what do you all recommend?
Minispares seem to do 2 options (don't want to fork out for a cross pin)
1. hardened pin, with or without bushed gears.
2. Moly coated pin, but using std. gears.
Which of these is the 'tougher' setup?
It's used as a bit of a road rally car as well as 'normal' so gets a degree of abuse!!

the bushed gears pin is a waste of time as the bushes shuffle around. its only really ideal in situations where you need to reverse at high speed (i.e autotesting)
go for either the uprated std pin, or pay a little more and get the moly coated one.
i'd personally get a cross pin.
fit.
forget.

For any sort of motorsport a cross-pin is really the only way to go.
They are just soooo strong. On one rally, I handbraked around a hairpin with a fairly big drop off on the outside. It was a looser surface than I thought and the car started to slide towards the edge. I was thus in 1st gear with my foot on the power at something like 7200 rpm with the inside wheel spinning like mad. Then the steering went very heavy and it turned out that I had friction-welded one of the planet wheels to one of the diff pins. I drove to the end of the test and was about to retire. However, to get back to the public road I had to go right through the next test and, mid-way through, the steering lightened. We went on to finish second overall after a further 300 miles and what had happened was that the pin had sheared inside the cross-pin housing. We did over 300 miles on a broken pin with no adverse effects. Now, that's how tough they are. By the way, it was a Mini Spares supplied cross-pin, so talk to guru1071 about getting one.
