Hi all.

Hope you are all having a good thursday.

I have decided I want to get a new/different slr. I have a nikon d50 with 3 lens (18-55, 70-200 and a macro) Altogether it has cost me around £1000. I have only bought these in the last 8 months so all pretty brand new. Going to trade them in for a new camera and lens. Hoping to get atleast a couple of hundred pounds for the lot. Do you think £450 would be unreasonable or do you think its too low?? Taking them to the london camera exchange so they can value them.

I have always had canons but got the nikon d50 as its all i could afford at the time. I would like to go back to Canon. Which canon would you suggest? Roughly around the £700 mark??

Thanks all

Nik

Honest answer is to first ask the question why do you want to swop out of the D50?

As you've invested in the Nikon lenses then you'll take a total bath in trade-in value and will get nothing like their original cost.

If you're upgrading for quality purposes then I'd consider just swapping the D50 body to a D80 and keep the lenses. D80 bodies are approx £500 and you might get £100-£150 for the D50. This should be your least expensive option to swap.

If you're changning because you simply don't like the Nikon then I'd have a play with the new Canon EOS 400D and see if you prefer that. Currently seems to be doing the rounds at approx £550 with kit lens but then you'll have to make allowances for your telephoto zoom and macro lenses on top and this uses compact flash rather than the SD cards that the D50 and D80 use so you'll need to allow for new cards as well

Overall however you need to play with both cameras and see which you prefer, both are capable of great quality results and the key factor is always the person behind the camera.

If you are part-exchanging, I don't remember LCE giving a good deal. (Actually they gave my 10D and some lenses a ridiculous price!) I'd definitely shop around first. I've used ffordes https://secure.ffordes.com/index.htm and Westcliff Photographic www.westcliffphoto.com/catalogues/ before and they both gave me a decent deal.

And well done for seeing the light and coming back to Canon!!! For your budget, I think it would have to be either 350D or 400D, or 2nd hand 20D but it may not leave you much for the lenses.

The 400D looks good. Although you wouldnt regret digging deeper and buying a 20/30D, if budget allowed for a decent lens too.

Can you stretch your budget, or get a lens (or part thereof) as an early xmas pressie from someone significant?

£100 cash back on the Canon 30D at the moment.

If you've got an Egg card and buy at Dixons it makes the camera ridiculously cheap

..Thanks for all your replies. Ihave brought in my d50 and all 3 lenes today so going to see how much the LCE will give for it all. Am now considering the Canon 400d or the Sony alpha 100. Anyone have any first hand experience with the new sony slr?? Read a few reviews and they seem pretty positive.

If you have to choose between the Canon 400d and the Alpha 100 which would you go for??

Sony is too much in its infancy IMO.

I'd choose the Canon, for the range of lenses available

I've had the Sony a100 for about 2 months and overall I'm pretty happy with it. Just before I bought it I borrowed a friends 350d for a week. Frankly the Sony feels MUCH better than the 350d handling wise (size and UI). However, if you're buying with the expectation of upgrading very soon I'd steer clear of the Sony. At the moment the system is geared to towards SLR newbies (like myself) who aren't likely to be clamouring for pro lenses and bodies any time soon. Its going to be a while before I'm ready to splash some cash on expensive upgrades (both body and lenses) so until then I'm content to pick up used KM lenses which are fairly easily available. Let me know if you have any particular questions about the Sony.

Considering the range of lenses and accessories available (including second hand), I'd definitely go for Canon. I have nothing against Sony (I used to be a Minolta user) but I feel Canon system is more complete.

..well went into the LCE yesterday and i have decided on the Canon 400d. Anyways, got myself up this morning and went to exchange my camera and lense and I got a canon 400d £529.99 inc 18-55 lens, i also got another lens which is 70-300 for £169.99, a 2gb m.card and a lens protecter/filter. In the end i only spent an extra £320ish i think as the man gave me £380 for my camera and kit in the end, he let me have the 2gb card for £49 instead of £79 and he gave me the filter for £5 instead of £14. So really, i dont think iv come off too badly in the deal.

Just wanna get out there now and start snapping away. So glad ive gone back to canon!
