Just out of interest (ok a pub argument) can anyone tell me the rough torque figures for a 5 litre Griff at low revs. I 'boasted' to my mate who has an MG (TF 160) that I'd have more torque out the traps than she'd see for Sundays. We know the top figures prove the point but what is the Griff shoving out low down - some graphs of any dyno'd cars would be great.

I had a dyno print-out for a mildly fettled 500 engine, but it went with the car.

Needless to say, the curve was very flat and I would think that 200ft/lbs at 2000 rpm should be a realistic figure for a standard 500.

Tell your mate to sell his ridiculous hairdressers handbag and get a proper car.

Even a Mazda MX5 would be better than the thing he's got.

There are some dyno print-outs in Vol.2 of steve heath's bible.

hope this helps

Her car, but we can still hope to claim the unconverted, and yes she is a hair stylist! I reckoned 200 was about right, I assumed the MG shoves about 150 torque max at 5/6'000 and rather peaky. Must check the stats on the web site of whoever owns them now. I know it isn't me - didn't get an uptake offer in the post

Typo? I've a graph for my standard pre serp 500 - 300lb/ft at 2000 rpm (and what looks like 260lb/ft at 1500 rpm).

Mines a serp, power figures changed a bit over the years but all we think they were a bit exageratted (that's another issue)

Anyway we are talking torque and 260 at 1500 is incredible but wholly believable and goes some way to showing you how hard they are in ice.

So at just over tickover it does have the pants off her?

The graph was done in July, at TCS and is a Dyno Dynamics one. The peak torque was around 330 lb/ft @ 4000rpm. At 4500 revs the reading was 280bhp, this figure is totally consistant with a 340bhp engine. HOWEVER, once past 4000rpm the torque drops and at 5500rpm the torque is about the same again as 1500rpm, hence the peak power came out at 283 bhp at 5000 rpm!
When crawling aroung generally I do tend to drive at 1000-1500 revs, however on coming back from said session I did get a slight wiggle on exiting a roundabout, about 1600 revs in 3rd. Should have changed into 4th I think boxedin

Edited to add - Something I don't know is how modified cars (upgraded cams) are at very low rpm scratchchin

Yep, Mine is un-modified but you are correct, the torque kick can catch you out. One of my exes had a Tamora and the torque curve on that is more progressive (sorry Speed 6 guys)

I won't open up a hornets nest here but Tamora versus Griff - Tamora fastest, more capable without doubt. But I know which I want to drive; the big V8 luddite

Hehehehe, I dont think so! You'll be at 230bhp/Caterham R500 power at 150 torque! The trophy 160 vvc (160ps) has a max of 128 lb-ft at 4700rpm. It's weeeeeny.

Mind you the K is a great engine in a Caterham.

my 5ltr is a race motor so a bit of a differnt torque curve,

at 2000 rpm its got 250 ft/lb but goes straight up to 380ft/lb by about 2800rpm and just about stays there +- 10 ft/lb evil

Those stats are rather awesome, what's the lowest rpm it will acutally work with (as previous post, just always wondered this with the Rover engines) ?

My previous w/e toy was a lightweight jobbie (Sylva Fury), tuned XFlow (130 ish bhp) with about 560kgs to move about. Useless below 2000 rpm though, 1800 revs at the traffic lights = stalled engine !!

When you say race motor, do you know if it is "squarer" than normal, ie bigger bore/shorter stroke to allow higher rpm - or just stronger / lighter / better balanced internals ?

The engine specs are here www.castle-race-engines.com/index.php?f=data_home&a=5

so standard tvr bore and stroke. peak bhp is at about 5600 red line at 6k

there is still plenty of torque at low rpm. infact off the line on cold slicks i am barely above tickover, as anything else just lights up the tyres.

The only thing that stops it being nice on the road is slow speed shunting. that is due to the cam and the fact its still on a single plenum. going to throttle bodies would probably cure that. currently it doesnt like anything below about 30mph.

we are probably going to experiment with a milder cam over the winter as Jamie thinks we can fiddle with the torque a bit.

A good number of dyno runs, including Larco's starndard 5.0 litre Griff on the bottom of here...
