Taking Mrs Tee for a surprise break just after Christmas for her birthday.

I’m looking for a nice, out of the way hotel with log fire, great food and a place to just relax for a couple of days. I’m in staffs, but will travel and don’t really have a budget.

Any ideas?

The Manor House in Castle Combe. Ace location, ace service (friendly and effecient and not pompous), ace food. Have their own golf course and CC Race Track nearby too.

I got married there... it is rather superb. NO leisure facilities though

Lake District is always a good bet. Not too far to get too.

Failing that there's a corking couple of manor house type hotels down on the Isle of Purbeck....Swanage way.

if you fancy heading down that way may i be as bold to suggest Lucknam Park Hotel, as you have no budget that should do you - a truly sublime hotel and Afternoon tea to die for - we did a New years break there a couple of years ago and go back every year now - truly truly outstanding hotel and nothing is too much trouble !!

For something a little different, I cannot recommend this enough: The Star Inn at Harome. Ticks all the boxes for warming fire and great food...ask for the room with the pool table (room 5)

I can recommend the Radnorshire Arms, in Presteigne, Powys.

Info Here

Me and Mrs Lazyitus go here every year. Presteigne is a beautiful small town on the borders and will take you no longer than 2 hours to get to.

If you do go, visit the Judges Lodging. A fascinating, award winning 'as it was' museum.

You can spend 2 days in and around Presteigne for a really relaxing break. Very peaceful and ideal at Christmas / winter time.

Try Cliveden House if you've no budget.
Gorgeous National Trust place set in hundreds of acres of parkland leading down to the Thames.
Pricey but worth it as a treat!

South - Cliveden - www.clivedenhouse.co.uk

Middle - Stapleford Park - www.staplefordpark.com

Oop North - Skibo Castle - www.carnegieclub.co.uk

Skibo is members only but you can stay once as a guest (effectively to try it out). Tis where old Guy and Madge got hitched. Would get my vote if you can travel that far.

I can recommend the Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge in the Lake District, at the foot of Lake Windermere (Me and my wife are going there for a few days between Christmas and New Year).
Not a country house type hotel, but 4 star and in a quiet spot away from the hordes. The rooms and food are nice, and there are leisure facilities, but no spa.

I was going to say Lucknam Park, near Castle Coombe. Stunning place.

Seconded - Lucknam Park is really, really nice, and they treat you like royalty. Oh, and the cakes that come with afternoon tea are the best. Really.

Recommendation seconded for the Manor House at CC.

If you're in that area without a budget, I would strongly suggest Whatley Manor.

Looks like Lucknam Park is getting a good shout.

It's is wonderfull though - largest bed I've ever slept in! Also the fella that took us shooting was a top bloke. I know the ladies thought the spa facilities some of the best they'd ever used.

It's nice pulling up at the front of the place, drop the keys with the chap waiting for you, go and have a nice drink and then when you get to your room everything has been unpacked and put away for you.

The service standards are awesome.
