Shown up by a 330d saloon

Taking it easy down the A38 today doing 70 ish, when i spotted something blasting up behind. So dropped down a couple of gears to lose him..................but it just didnt happen, he sat right on my arse. Slow down and pull upto the island, look over and its a 330d saloon. So think i'll do him off the line, wrong, he gets a car length on me in 1st and about 2 lengths by the top end of second gear So drop back and pretend i wasnt really trying

In addition the 335D is a different engine to a 535D (All Alloy for starters) and I believe has slightly more power/torque so I think we can only guess what a DMS chipped one will be like.
I think there is 580 NM of torque in standard trim (or something along those lines)

I don't think so given the way BMW use the same engine in different series.
I stand corrected if they are differnt though.
Either way the touring that was cutting throught traffic on the M18 yesterday was certainly shifting !

As is typical BMW, I don't think these will have a slippy diff so it'd be either TC blinking all the time of lots of wheelspin.
I appreciate but don't much care for diesel BMWs. The petrol ones are much nicer but they'd be a good company car.
Those 330D can be very rapid. Very very early one morning earlier on this year as I headed to the airport in the 911 a 330D tried it on off the traffic lights (Kirkstall Rd Leeds). Must have been chipped since while the 911 ended up in front and I stopped accelerating at 50mph I was shocked at quite how close it was. He tried again off the next set of lights with the same result - 911 in front all the way to 50 mph but me shocked by how close he was. Would love to know how chipped that car is since it really was a moral victory to the DERV just for the shock he gave me.
On the topic of 320TDs I've got one as a run around (ehm hardly ever gets used in reality) and despite what most TD drivers seem to believe they are a long long way from fast.

330d's are bloody quick. The older E46 had 187BHP I think, but over the years they changed the engine quite a bit. The current E90 330d has a 230+BHP engine which is much lighter than the older unit. Consider that a few years ago the 328i had less than 200BHP and the 330i had 230+BHP - so the current model has the benefit of equal power but buckets more torque.... its an impressive car and in real-world situations very very quick. Accessing the power is simple and a well driven 330d is a real challenger to quite a lot of much more powerful cars.
....and then you can chip it.....
A chap I know has a 250BHP 530d and its flippin' fast - and thats an E39 rather than the later engine fitted to the E60 and E90! I wonder what DMS / Superchips / ChippedUK can do with an E90 330d?

Gonna be fairly heavy though, having a gearbox/drivetrain to control 580Nm of torque etc... so will be fast but unlike the M3 and revvy petrols, the more power they get the less fun they probably are to drive... become a little pointless? Just a fast barge?
I'm waiting for the 135D with a bit of remapping

I had a similar thing on Sunday on my way back from Burnham-on-Crouch after a nice days sail.
Making smooth and quick progress in the R32 (has around 270bhp) when an M kitted 5 series BM slots in behind me. Over the next 10-15 miles, I proceeded to dispatch the Sunday dawdlers with ease but every time, the BM was there right behind me. I could believe how quick it was during the overtakes. I was sitting thinking (hoping) that it must be an M5 but a few miles down the road we both went different ways and as it passed me, I was shocked to see a 535d badge on the back.
Really shocked just how fast those cars are but checking on the specs, it seems they have around 270bhp but with a bucket load more torque than my car. Really impressed.

Good point. The 3.0d engine has been developed heavily over the years and the original 187BHP version was quick (this was the version that Jenson Button got busted in for driving at 140+MPH). But the criticisms at the time were that the engine was heavy and disturbed the balance of the car. Since then BMW have made the engine lighter and lighter. The swapped from the old 2903cc (IIRC) engine to an all-new 2998cc (IIRC) engine for the new E60 and E90 models. This boosted power but also significantly dropped the weight of the engine. They used some bizarre manufacturing processes and also adopted an aluminium-alloy block and some weird-and-wonderfull alloy for other bits. The resulting engine is still heavier than a petrol, but only just. Its the addition of the turbo(s) and pipework that adds the weight and pound-for-pound there isnt much in it between the 3.0 twin turbo diesel and petrol engines..... both have virtually the same power but differing torque figures....
BMW see the development of their engines and cars in efficiency and weight. The new 3.0 petrol which is coming is even lighter and efficient and the next generation of cars will be significantly lighter too. Mind you, older BMW's have never been on the very heavy side anyway. From the early journo reviews of the new 3.0 petrol though, they were getting 35+MPG in mixed traffic without a problem - up about 15%-20% on the current one. Which reduces the advantage of a diesel quite a bit. Give it a year or so and the gap between petrol and diesel will shorten - which makes it interesting...
But, still I need to work and stop blithering on about engines..... good review from Car and Driver though, a nice comparison between the petrol and diesel. Interesting reading:
